Excited to share our @SIGGRAPH 2026 paper: "Gradient Descent in the ALPS: Abstracted Low-Poly Stylization and Fabrication" 🏔️
ALPS turns any image into clean, palette-constrained low-poly art that's provably valid for fabrication as embroidery, mosaics, and more. 🧵👇
@NIkronic Yeah ALPS is definitely in the continuity of SD-piXL, at least in spirit! Basically generating within constraints by using an optimization procedure rather than direct generation. Which is cool because we can steer the optimization in any desired direction!

@RealAstropulse In her case she created an account and she received the welcome email. She also thanked me for answering.
I think in that case, it’s probably just someone a bit old who genuinely thought she was going to pay.
But thanks for the advice, I’ll keep an eye on it!
Work with amazing collaborators @ IGL (ETH Zurich): Ruben Wiersma, myself, Peizhuo Li, Tanguy Magne, Annika Oehri, Aviv Segall, Danielle Luterbacher, Marcel Padilla, Jing Ren & Olga Sorkine-Hornung.
Yes, our WHOLE lab was involved in this paper!! Was a lot of fun to work on it 😁.

Because the output is a valid, palette-constrained mesh, it maps directly to real-world crafts:
🧵 Embroidery
🪟 Wood mosaics / stained glass
🧶 Tapestry crocheting
🪡 Patchwork
🎨 Stencil printing
Version 1.1.3 of Boldbobbin is out! Main new thing: auto-digitizing, which is basically an auto-trace.
Many improvements are planned to make it more specific to embroidery, but I'm happy with the current result. Works pretty neatly on logos!
