@trad_poet She didn’t write many novels, mostly short stories, but Flannery O’Connor’s novel ‘The Violent Bear it Away’ is one of the greatest southern gothic novels I’ve ever read.
Desperately underrated.
@megievalist ‘I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud’ by Wordsworth is hard to beat as an introductory piece to the form!
Personally, the poems that did it for me were ‘Digging’ and ‘St Francis and the Birds’ by Seamus Heaney, and ‘The Darkling Thrush’ by Thomas Hardy!
@Andrewnsnyder I believe a little story called, “Leaf by Niggle” provides a great argument. None of our efforts for goodness, beauty, and truth, unfinished though they may be, are wasted. Create! One day your sapling may turn into a great oak.
@exhaustdata I’m about three quarters through Europe Central right now. There’s a big debate about who America’s Homer is right now — got a feeling Vollman will enter that conversation at some point. I’ve never read anything like him.
@Andrewnsnyder I think in addition to this, your ability to properly adapt that man from literature into cinema reveals your ability to properly analyze literature and your capacity for slow and intentional reading.
