The biggest breastfeeding challenge a Mum faces is an entire industry that profits from her NOT breastfeeding. They use powerful social engineering to set HER bf goal to use bottles, dummies, UPF powder, pumps, sleep training etc to separate her from her innate ability to nurture
Predatory marketing at its worst. We demand @WHO Code, penalties for breaches. MAIF, endorsed by @healthgovau, falls short as Australia’s "response" to the Code… and this is the result.
I stand with Dr. Mélissa Mialon's call for women to lead conversations on breastfeeding matters! Mothers are the key stakeholders and the experts on breastfeeding, their voices should be privileged!
The letter is spot on. It’s almost unfathomable that @Lancet could be so blind about this - and yet not. The authors’ reply is just as bad and simply confirms the blindness. Would not be out of place as a SNL skit. @TheLancet - Do better!!
@MIALONMelissa Bravo Mélissa! I agree completely and so do my colleagues. Women are the key stakeholders and experts on motherhood and breastfeeding. Their voices should be be privileged, not white men from high income countries. I’m sick of them speaking for us!
@Mark_Butler_MP Australia’s MAIF is inadequate, we need International Code legislation with penalties and fines for breaches with effective monitoring and evaluation of implementation now!
Rates of exclusive breastfeeding are 20 percentage points higher in countries that have legislation substantially aligned with the Code than in countries without it. @DrTedros#EndExploitativeMarketing
Our Facebook post on the lack of accurate breastfeeding statistics in Australia All infants need to be recorded until five years @AlboMP Lack of statistics shows lack of value for life saving breastfeeding @Lisa_H_Amir https://t.co/3sy4DftCFY
Formula is the first ultra processed food that many babies receive and without risk assessment. Industry hide the facts about their product. Weasel words and falsehoods abound. Many are fearful of industry influence. We stand for the babies. Save lives 🤱🏿🤱
The public and government need an awareness of the role of successful breastfeeding as the single most important public health measure a country can implement.
@healthgovau
@MIALONMelissa So true! So many advocates who have partnerships or funding with for-profit organisations think they can keep the arrangement free from COI. But the minute you take money or endorse a commercial entity there is an inherent COI.
@SAHealth@Mark_Butler_MP@MarkDreyfusKCMP@AlboMP This is why we need @WHO Code When Health Depts use bottle emojis to define infant feeding instead of 🤱🏼🤱🏿there is a major problem Industry social engineering at its worst This is costing lives
