Wisconsin is the second state to participate in Citizen Solutions, which was piloted in Tennessee on gun rights and safety. During that feedback period, more than 30,000 people weighed in and five proposals were ultimately brought to the state legislature.

“We agree that the circumstances surrounding abortion are rarely simple.”

These are the words of fourteen strangers with different views on abortion. Against the backdrop of a polarized state and country, they came together to find solutions.

A woman who regrets her abortion. An OB/GYN. A man who prays outside abortion clinics. A domestic violence and sexual assault professional. A board member at a pro-life pregnancy center. A mother who had a second trimester abortion because her son was incompatible with life.

These are some of the participants who joined our solution session on abortion and family well-being to demonstrate just how problematic the binary, overly simplistic conversation on abortion has become. They explored common values, built an understanding of the issue’s complexity, and developed solutions that incorporate many views.

Their common ground came not in the form of abortion access or restrictions, but in addressing root causes, increasing access to medically-accurate information, and making it easier and more affordable to have kids. One participant said, “We focused on the things we can, and must, change.”

The process has been challenging but worth it. A pro-life advocate said his “compassion level increased tremendously.” An abortion rights advocate said she was reminded of the importance of “being in community with people who think differently.” Now these unlikely allies invite the public to weigh in on their proposals: https://t.co/fFBXWNfP3w
