It is difficult to envision how Israel could rebuild trust with the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF). Just a year ago, the LAF’s highest command assured Israel, the United States, and the international community that no Hezbollah weaponry remained in southern Lebanon. However, subsequent Israeli operations uncovered not only vast stockpiles of rockets, missiles, drones, and RPGs, but also an extensive network of strategic tunnels and thousands of Hezbollah-aligned fighters, including Iranian, Iraqi, and Afghan nationals. Consequently, a formal peace and security agreement between Israel and the sovereign Lebanese government must be established before any military withdrawal can take place.
