Every Prime Minister enters No.10 believing they will act with integrity, but every prime minister also gets conflicted by the political headwinds. That’s why we need a fully independent process for dealing with complaints bullying and harassment against ministers.

I’ve written to Andy Burnham before he becomes Prime Minister, urging him to take the opportunity with his new Ministerial Code, to go further than his predecessors, recognise the inherent conflict of sitting as judge and jury on complaints against his ministers and introduce a fully transparent process for dealing with complaints of bullying and harassment.

At our Annual Delegate Conference, FDA General Secretary Dave Penman warns that “trust is required for good, effective, and agile government. But I’m afraid that trust is in short supply”.

Penman argues that the recent treatment of former Sir Chris Wormald and Sir Olly Robbins will impact delivery as officials believe they will be “thrown under the bus if it serves a narrow political objective”.

The chill this has sent through the civil service is no surprise. Sir Olly's dismissal comes just two months after the PM sacked the Cabinet Secretary after extensive anonymous briefing.

Government only works when there is trust between ministers and civil servants.

You would think from some of the commentary out there that, instead of Dame Antonia Romeo, the cabinet secretary, publishing her objectives on Tuesday, she had instead authored her own version of the Communist Party Manifesto.

Confirmation of what we’ve long suspected. If Reform get in to government, they’ll adopt an American style politicisation of the civil service. As we’ve seen with the Trump administration, people brought in to lead key parts of the state not on ability, but on belief & loyalty.

Speaking today at the unveiling of a plaque in honour of the first female civil servant, Jeanie Nassau Senior, FDA President @haig_margaret says Nassau Senior “spoke truth to power, championing the values we still defend as a civil service union today: integrity, honesty, objectivity and impartiality.”
