Private school families across the country are actively seeking a more personalized and engaging approach to education that focuses on rigorous academics alongside life skills. That demand is driving one of our biggest expansions to date.

This fall we will open with 50 Alpha campuses including new campuses in Kirkland, Park City, Denver, Dorado, East Bay, Palo Alto, Malibu, Santa Monica, South Bay LA, La Jolla, Chicago, Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Highland Park, Southlake, The Woodlands, Nashville, Charlotte, Raleigh, Greenwich, Jamaica Plain (Boston), Lexington (Boston), Atlanta, Boca Raton and Miami Beach.

First week of @Alphaschool South Bay LA is in the books for my three kids. I'm super impressed already, but I drank the Koolaid long ao. Here's a spattering of updates if you're interested.
* Transparency - night and day between this summer. We were honestly scared the location search would die, but now that school is open, the comms from the school is almost overwhelming. And, through Timeback, I'm already tracking daily learning.
* Earn everything - I've heard this multiple times from my kids this week. They are blown away by what they can earn, but realize they have to earn it. My middle daughter came home one day and immediately told me she wanted to make goals with her guide so she could earn a set of headphones that's available.
* Field trips - The kids were informed they will go on 50-60 field trips this year, which 3-4 on domestic flights, and 1 Int'l. All, only if earned. The 1st field trip happened on day 4!
* MAP testing only in mornings so far, so no screen learning yet. Setting a baseline. My son tested at 99% on Math 8th grade MAP test, while my 7th grade daughter tested at 3rd grade science and reading. Both don't really care...they know that all that matters is how well they improve from here.
* The Playa Vista building is huge and decked out. Kids and guides are planning use of all sorts of empty rooms (they have to earn each) - 3d printer room, woodworking room, gaming room, movie room, garden, drone room, futsol field/team/room, maker space room, art room, science lab, etc.
* "How was school?" All 3 kids are already responding "good, great, fun". Huge step up from last years' answers "boring, sucks, ugh".
* Enrollment: 25 kids a week before school, now already at 28. (I believe we'll be at 60-100 by year end.) No complaints about the number of kids of friends or anything like that yet.
* Carpools are amazing already. Interesting conversations among kids K-8. Partially just great kids, partially due to their excitement around school. 10x better than previous year carpools.
* First workshop is learning to surf, 2x/wk. Learning independence, goals, tools, safety, grit, etc.

I’m an Alpha dad and my son is in this bootcamp.

The “receiving critical feedback” exercise worried me at first, but that's not how it played out.

He came to me with deeply personal questions about who he was becoming as a young man and how he could grow... questions he hadn't exactly asked me before. Sure, we should all have difficult conversations around the dinner table every single night. If you do, congrats. I don't always succeed.

But this exercise? It led to a multiple hour long conversation between us where I answered critically but did so also with kindness and a focus on growth. Very little of what I said was shared with the school and even less was shared in the class.

The heart monitor was probably meant to make the exercise feel like a game. While I can’t speak for every family, all I know is that this brought me closer to my son.

For that, I am grateful.

We created the Dean of Parents role to give parents a direct point of contact for support, questions, and feedback. Our Deans regularly reach out to parents to solicit feedback and make sure their voices are heard.

My daughter is about a month in with GT Anywhere school.

A couple observations

She has become more independent
She has developed troubleshooting skills
She understands that failure is okay
Said that going to school is fun
She seems happier because she now has more time to do things she wants

It has also been cool to see how fast she is moving through material and learning.
