Akpabio-Natasha: Let’s Protect the Institution, Not Individuals
I have watched from afar the recent development in the Senate between the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and the Senator from Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. It is a development that has made me sad because of its overall negative effect on the integrity, sanctity, image, and public perception of the institution. I believe that every person who has had anything to do with the National Assembly, particularly as a leader, member, and worker should always jealously protect these values which make the institution, the numero uno, among the three arms of government.
It is for these reasons that I believe that the two parties in this dispute and their supporters in and out of the chamber should be mindful of the impact of their actions, inactions, reactions, claims, and counter-claims to be sure that nothing is done to rubbish the institution. The constitution, laws of the country, rules of the Senate as well as parliamentary conventions and practices should be adhered to in resolving the issue. And the resolution should be done transparently without being seen to be protective of any of the parties. Rather, the objectives should be to unfold the truth and to protect the law-making institution against a wrong perception of involvement in or tolerance of lawbreaking.
At this point, with the public claims made by the Senator, the right measure to take is to institute an open, transparent, and honest investigation by the Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions. Both parties must submit to the investigation, fully cooperate with the committee, and stake their claims before it. This is not the first time a Senate President would appear before the Committee to aid it in the conduct of a transparent and open investigation. I remember during the 8th Senate when a Senator claimed that I imported an official car for my use as Senate President and that customs duty was not paid on the vehicle. Since I knew the claim was false, the matter was referred to the Ethics Committee and I appeared before the committee to testify, in the full glare of the media. From my testimony, it was clear the Senator who made the allegation got his facts wrong and was only being mischievous.
Also, on the day the committee submitted its report for debate on the floor, I stepped down and allowed my deputy to preside. The transparent manner in which the investigation and the debate on the report were handled assured everybody that there was no case. This is a precedent that the leadership of the 10th Senate should follow.
In my case, the decision to allow an open investigation and subjecting myself to it was not an easy one. It was humbling but I realized that was the best decision and in the end I am happy I travelled that route.
We should not allow the Senate to be cast in the shroud of an institution encouraging sexual harassment, gender bias, abuse of office, flagrant disregard for standing orders and rules, and lack of orderliness. This is what a transparent, open, and unbiased investigation should achieve. The due process should be followed in this case such that where anybody is found to have committed any wrong, the wrong should be pointed out and corrected. Also, the right remedy should be made.
Let me make it clear without any ambiguity that I am neither stating that Akpabio is guilty of anything nor am I expressing the opinion that Senator Akpoti Uduaghan is right in her actions and claims. My position is that an investigation is needed to find out the truth and protect the integrity of the Senate.
For me, the institution of the Senate is so important, sacred, and pre-eminent. All lovers of democracy should always work to strengthen it. No leader or member should be allowed to openly or surreptitiously work to subvert its sanctity.
Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, CON
former Senate President and Waziri of Ilorin
In October 2018, A first Class Chief of the Adara Chiefdom, Dr Raphael Maiwada Galadima who had disagreed with Elrufai over his plan to balkanize the Adara Chiefdom was abducted by terrorists alongside his wife and aide on his way back from Kaduna to Kajuru.
While his wife and aide were eventually released days later after ransom was paid, the Chief was eventually murdered in cold blood by his captors.
His captors and killers were arrested weeks later but nothing was ever heard about them till date.
While in prison in 2019, I was privileged to meet the terrorists but all through my stay in jail (162 days) they never went to court for trial.
Elrufai went on to balkanize the Adara Chiefdom.
Elders of Adara who spoke against this injustice were arrested and kept in Kaduna Prison by Elrufai for over 100 days for "culpable homicide" even when the police had told Elrufai that investigations showed nothing against the 9 elders.
Elrufai is a bloody, vindictive and sadistic person that ordinarily should not be anywhere near the corridors of power.
In 2013, the senate joint committee on FCT and housing which probbed FCT administrations from 1999-2007 declared that; “el-Rufai is not a fit and proper person to hold office in a democratic setting.”
His tenure as Kaduna governor actually proved the Senate committee right. He was not just reckless but also brutal with power.
Today, he is running from pillar to post seeking sympathy from the public over a delusional betrayal that exists only in his warped mind.
May Elrufai never happen to any democratic society again.
Amen.

3. Is it possible to devote an entire episode of whats trending to call INEC out for them to realise what people think about them and see if there could be a change?
@OjyOkpe
2. While reading through comments by citizens on X, I couldn't see anything good in their comments. Everyone was either cursing INEC or saying it was just a waste of time. It's that bad.
@OjyOkpe
1. Hello Jinix. Just to commend you and your team on what's trending. I don't like missing any episode. I just saw a post by INEC showing their staff who travelled to monitor the just concluded US elections.
@RealOlaudah Imagine the Senate President joking about the suffering citizens, asking them to avail themselves any time they see free food. How more can one be insensitive? Everything in the Senate that has to do about serious national issues has now become comedy.
Verdict of comparison between Feastables and Hersheys Milk chocolate: @Feastables certainly tastes better. It's one of the very best chocolates I've ever tasted. Thanks, @MrBeast, for this product.
Comparing Feastebles Milk Chocolate with Hersheys Milk Chocolate: Which tastes better? A task from my kids who are fans of @MrBeast@Feastables before I leave US back to Nigeria. See verdict in 2nd video.
I've said it many times before, and just as nobody was listening then, I know nobody is listening now, but I'll say it again because hey, why not?
Dear African organised private sector:
The reason that your operating environment is always trying to kill you, and you struggle to grow despite having a market of 1.4 billion of the world's youngest people, is because nearly all of the think tanks, policy research institutes, civil society organisations, and media in Africa are owned, funded, directed or controlled by external actors who are trying to kill you. Your growth and success are not in their interests.
If you have ambitions of becoming what you really ought to become, you must come together and fund African think tanks, policy research institutes, civil society organisations, and - especially - media. You need to do this with the full understanding that these things will never turn a direct profit for you, and they are investments with a long turnaround, but that if well done, they are the difference between remaining a village champion capitalist and getting Africa Finance Corporation to approve financing for a pipeline that raises your country's energy generation by 50,000MW and turns you into billionaires.
If you don't come together and do this, rest assured that white men are already doing it for you. Just that their think tanks are recommending that your countries should defund higher education and starve you of the human capital you need to succeed; their policy research institutes are publishing papers calling for the continent with 3.9 percent of global emissions to do "energy transition" to cut the emissions it doesn't have; their civil society organisations are focused on LGBTQ - which is famously Africa's greatest and most pressing issue; and their media is drip-feeding your market of 1.4 billion consumers with every type of misinformation and disinformation under the sun.
If you're happy with that, then never mind me. I'm just some Nigerian yapper who thinks too much for his own good, and we're all gonna die anyway. ✌🏾
I taught my Primary 2 students using LED to detect counterfeit money. The students assembled LED light circuits and tested them on real money.
These kids are 8 years old, and they arrived at my class when they were 6 and knew almost nothing. Our children in Nigeria are not different, but the kind of foundational education given to them is completely different from This is what Nigeria can take away from this:
1. LANGUAGE: Using Chinese language to explain LED circuits was so easy for them to understand, and took less than 6 mins. They never have to worry about understanding the grammar or remembering new vocabulary if another language was used. Humans have different abilities, and language acquisition is a skill that’s not evenly distributed. While you or your son can learn a new language fast, others might not be strong in language, but really good in science and technology. Nigeria should use native languages to teach primary school children right from the first day of school. With many native languages, autonomous regions with different official languages should be the best direction, with an option for international classes that is more English focused. Build local economies first before looking outward to setting up economies that are national or international.
2. CURRICULUM: If you don’t change with time, time will leave you behind. Nigeria’s future is left behind because of outdated curricula right from primary to tertiary. The world has moved on a long time ago, and we must wake up to reality and realize that the output of our educational system doesn’t help our economic growth. We don’t have major local industries, inventions, breakthroughs because what students learn doesn’t fit the current reality. What is Nigeria’s stage when it comes to industrialization? Is Nigeria a baby, toddler or teenager? Then her education output should be a balanced diet that will aid her growth for the next 5-10 years, and the curriculum is the structure that ensures that. With the way the world is changing so fast, the curriculum should be reviewed and adjusted annually. This is what we do. My students first came to our school so tiny, many of them don’t know how to even write their names. We taught them most of what they know today, and because we have a curriculum that is modern, targets what the students really need to know, and its always modified to reflect their realities, they have acquired so much knowledge about how the world around them works like electricity, engines, space, aerodynamics, mechanics and environmental protection in a short time Miracles and prayers alone will not come from heaven to correct our future. It’s now or we will always be the laughing stock of the world.
3. GROUP WORK: North, south, east, west, these kids are from all parts of the country. We train them to work together, and show them how their country is becoming better everyday by group work; how many sectors, companies, organizations, groups, tribes work together as a team to achieve goals that benefits everyone at a personal level. In Chinese, we always tell them to “He Zuo 合作” which means cooperate. They are learning that at a young age, so when they get old, they know that the value of cooperation far exceeds the benefits of sentiments and bigotry to their economic well being and national future.
4. TEACHERS: Teachers should earn more than law makers and governors. This is how it is in any sane and developed society. When you pay teachers well, the best brains and minds in your society will occupy schools and universities, and will inspire the next generation of inventors, businessmen and women, artists and professionals. Don’t be proud to say that you are paying your qualified primary school teachers minimum wage, it’s pathetic.
I love miracles as much as I love working hard. If I have a choice, I’ll rather work hard while others wait for miracles. Nigerian’s need to adopt a mentality of working hard and being consistent.
