At the invitation of the Government of the Syrian Arab Republic, @rafaelmgrossi, Director General of the IAEA, visited the Syrian Arab Republic on 17-18 August 2026 and held a meeting with @AsaadHShaibani, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates.
The visit, which included the site at Deir Ez-Zor and a second location related to the nuclear material identified by Syria recently, marks the most significant advance to date in the cooperation between Syria and the Agency, towards resolving the outstanding safeguards issues arising from undeclared activities related to the former regime, under Syria’s Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Safeguards Agreement.

Following my June visit to Syria, @iaeaorg is moving ahead with #RaysOfHope support for a new brachytherapy facility that will significantly improve cancer survival rates, especially for women.
At #IAEAGC, I met with Syrian Atomic Commission’s Mudar Al-Okla to exchange on our growing cooperation, including #Atoms4Food.
As I’ve told the General Conference on Monday, we are verifying past nuclear activities in Syria, with the country agreeing to cooperate with full transparency.
Began important visit to Syria. Grateful to Atomic Energy Commission Director General Mudar Alokla for the warm welcome.
Our cooperation is key to closing outstanding issues and focusing on the much needed help @IAEAorg can provide Syria in health and agriculture.
I announced to him an ambitious @IAEAorg programme to support Syria with medical equipment and training for hospitals, as well as help in agriculture and water management. We will also begin exploring the possibility of nuclear power in Syria.
Honoured to meet Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa in Damascus. I recognise his courage in cooperating with full transparency to close a chapter of Syria’s past that diverted resources necessary for development. Non-proliferation is peace, and peace enables development.
Today in Damascus, I signed an agreement with @syrianmofaex’s Asaad al-Shaibani to benefit the lives of Syria’s people: #Atoms4Food for better agriculture and nutrition & #RaysOfHope for access to cancer diagnosis and treatment.
A forward-looking step for our cooperation.
As agreed yesterday with President Ahmed Al-Sharaa, @IAEAorg teams and I today had immediate and unrestricted access to sites relevant to clarifying Syria’s past nuclear activities.
A critical and transparent step towards resolving outstanding issues.
L'Italia ha fornito un supporto logistico indispensabile per questa importante missione dell’@IAEAorg in Siria e ha dimostrato ancora una volta il suo forte impegno per la pace e la sicurezza internazionale. Siamo grati per questo supporto.
For the next three months, 9 nominees from as many countries will engage with a rigorous itinerary of training, lectures and site visits as part of a group fellowship designed to help them discharge their duties as National Liaison Assistants (NLAs) to the @iaeaorg
