As a lifelong resident of Collinsville, Illinois, this issue hits close to home to me. (Literally 3 miles away from me)

Cahokia Mounds is a significant historical and cultural site not just here in the United States, but also in North America and on Earth. It is a site that belongs to the communities surrounding it, and to humanity as a whole.

Unfortunately, the opportunity for economic, cultural, and ecological development in the area both surrounding and including the site has truly been neglected by local officials and the State of Illinois. As a result, we have received less visitors to the area, which has impacted residents, small businesses, and even local governments.

My vision is to see Cahokia Mounds be reopened in full, restored ecologically through re-wilding efforts, and to be further recognized nationally. I also want to see more transparency and accountability be upheld as well.

We owe it to the workers and volunteers that serve there, the local residents and tourists that visit there, the next generation that will learn from there, and to the legacy of the Native Americans that once lived there.
