Endoscopic contamination is real and studied, contamination rates run roughly 1-5% in most surveillance studies.

"Thousands of Americans die each year" from this has no study behind it anywhere. The actual literature describes these infections as rare clinical events significant enough to study and prevent, but definitely not as a mass casualty event.

Meanwhile, colorectal cancer kills about 50,000 Americans a year, and colonoscopy screening is one of the most effective tools we have at catching it early or removing it before it becomes cancer at all.
