As a CS major, I enjoyed learning about the effect the technologies that I might develop will have on society. It's good to keep in mind that "users" are actual people with bodies and minds.

@VKuliecza This is so true! I believe that technology's role in our lives will only increase in the future. Maybe someday tech won't only help us pick a restaurant, but also bring the restaurant to us, like through VR.
A major takeaway is how big and small companies "fight for dominance" in the media "ecosystem," and the comparison between a predation hierarchy and the theory of disruptive innovation. Just like technologies, companies cycle through a hierarchy as well. #DCIM353McCormick
@dm_1498 This is a great prediction, especially since we're already seeing it happen during and after the pandemic. With advances in VR/AR, we could even see the workplace being moved to the Metaverse!
@sophiapannella1 I agree, but I also fear this will have a significant impact on human health as well. Many VR headsets cause headaches, dizziness, and the worsening of vision. Hopefully we can find a solution to this before it's too late!
@YuhanXie4 This is definitely imminent! I know that research for the 3D printing of organs is already being conducted as well, which could revolutionize healthcare and maybe even decrease the need for transplant donors.
In the coming decades, I predict that augmented reality will become more popularized than virtual reality, as people would prefer not to center their lives around something completely digital. #DCIM353McCormick
@JoeBrutgers I agree, and it would be best to practice with real-world examples of such technologies to get a feel of how the criteria works with technologies that we're already familiar with.
@rylayru This is pretty important-- disruptive technologies can have more of an effect on society in general, while disruptive innovation is more associated with economy and the companies distributing such technologies.
@JoeBrutgers Video games have always been a topic that has been split down the middle in terms of the positive and negative effects on society. Looking forward to see which side prevails!
@wen8_yuxin Artificial intelligence is going to play a massive part in our society-- especially when it comes to making our lives easier, as well as maybe making some lives harder with the amount of jobs AI can replace.
@refai_reshma Gene editing is a new and exciting technology to focus on! I know there's a growing concern around GMO's too, and how they're not considered "natural." I'd be really excited to see your opinion on that!
For my EDTP project, I will be focusing on the effects and disruption caused by Virtual and Augmented Reality. As a cs major, I want to learn about the effects of the technologies I will help develop some day.

@TIFFANYMEI9 Kids our age increasingly make fun of the "iPad kid" generation, and I think it's because our generation is the last to experience a childhood without the large presence of portable screens.
@kgps60 This is a bit ironic, because Facebook was originally made for college students. Now, it's almost as if the demographic that used Facebook in college have aged along with the platform. Nowadays, young people use platforms made within 5 years of their birth (TikTok, Snapchat, etc)
@IMDLR_ This concerns me. Personally, physical books are better when it comes to the reading experience, and I know I'm not alone in this sense. Hopefully physical books won't die out like DVDs or CDs, because they serve as a blue-light free alternative to staring at a screen all day.
Social media and filters have drastically changed how the youth sees themselves: the constant comparison to a "better," augmented version of themselves significantly lowers the self esteem of today's youth.
