Amsterdam Physiology

Department of Physiology at Amsterdam UMC focusing on the mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of genetic and acquired muscle and vascular diseases

[Amsterdam Physiology @AmsterdamPhys]

Amsterdam will host the EMC next year (September 20th-24th, 2025), in the beautiful Royal Tropical Institute. Save the dates and we hope to see many of you muscle aficionados here in '25!

The department was well represented this past week at the 51st European Muscle Conference in Ljubljana. We had several abstracts selected for talks, with PhD students Osman Esen and Sila Algül both taking home prizes for their presentations. Nice work!

Check out recent work from the Ottenheijm group, just published in @ScienceTM, where they demonstrate that TNNI1 variants cause muscle disease with variant-specific pathomechanisms, leading to either a hypo- or a hypercontractile phenotype. #MyoTwitter

New Paper Alert! 📜📜

Have you ever wondered what is exactly expressed in the cell line you use?

In this recent paper from @AmsterdamPhys authors show that widely used mouse cardiac microvascular cells don’t express essential endothelial markers...

Sodium–glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) are anti-diabetic drugs that show beneficial cardiovascular outcomes in patients with acquired heart failure, but can they correct cardiomyocyte dysfunction induced by hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) sarcomere mutations?

[Amsterdam Physiology @AmsterdamPhys]

Here, Wijnker and colleagues report that SGLT2i acutely enhances relaxation in human engineered heart tissues, especially in tissues harbouring HCM mutations and following prolonged culture. Thus, SGLT2i may represent a potential therapy to correct cardiac dysfunction in HCM.

From Marie Curie to Rosalind Franklin, women have been smashing glass ceilings and petri dishes alike. So, as we celebrate the International Day of Women in Science, let's tip our imaginary hats to all the ladies of science.

Reproducibility of stem-cell-derived models is an important aspect of animal-free innovations moving forward. A Dutch steering group, Amsterdam 4R, chaired by @JolandavanderV4, has been formed to address this issue. Read more about this initiative below:
