India Targets $51 Billion Import Bill With Major Domestic Manufacturing Push 🇮🇳🔥

India has identified around 100 strategically important products for immediate local manufacturing as it moves to reduce dependence on foreign suppliers, particularly China.

> Targeted products account for nearly $51 billion in annual imports
> Sectors include solar equipment, electric vehicles, textiles and footwear
> Government assessment identifies $398 billion in potential import substitution
> Incentives and subsidies may support cost competitiveness
> Joint ventures planned with companies from Taiwan, South Korea, Germany and Italy
> State-owned enterprises may also participate

India imported nearly $775 billion worth of goods in FY2025-26, including about $132 billion from China. The new strategy aims to convert a major import vulnerability into domestic investment, production and jobs.

The goal is not isolation from global trade, but greater control over the supply chains critical to India’s economic security.
