HAVING GRACE IN TRADING
No matter what, trading is always a really tough job, psychologically and emotionally. I know of a lot of traders that had rough Julys or are in drawdowns or are really beating themselves up over how they traded the semi bounce trade.
Given the pressures and stresses of this job and how type A competitive most of us are, it can be so easy to be incredibly hard on ourselves. I'm not sure all of that is productive, and I'm certain that it makes for a far less pleasurable career.
A few years ago I worked with one of the top health programs in the world, and my Incredible coach, Dr. Chris Perry, gave me advice that has stayed with me ever since.
During that time, one of the hardest things I’ve ever experienced happened. as a result, my sleep was terrible, my health habits slipped, and I was frustrated with myself because I felt like I wasn’t living up to the standards I set.
Dr. Perry advised me to have some grace for myself. His point wasn’t that what happened didn’t matter. It was that I needed to recognize I was going through something difficult and treat myself with the same compassion I’d show someone else. That mindset is what allows you to recover and move forward quicker and more effectively.
I think traders need this reminder more than almost anyone.
When you’re in a drawdown, questioning whether you’re actually good enough, or replaying mistakes over and over, it’s easy to let one stretch convince you that it defines who you are.
It doesn’t.
Grace isn’t about lowering your standards. It’s about separating what happened from who you are. A bad month doesn’t make you a bad trader. Blowing up an account doesn’t erase your potential or your ability to build the skills needed to succeed.
Hold yourself accountable. Learn the lesson. Then move forward without endlessly beating yourself up over what happened.
@EvanOmen@jfsrev Makes sense. It's good to have hard rules. I used the 10 last year but found myself underinvested at times and missing moves in big trenders.
I've been using the 20D this year to keep me in the big movers for longer. There are downsides, but focussing on leaders helps.
