1999. I’m 19 years old.

I’m visiting a friend in Chicago, and decide to take a train to Milwaukee to catch a baseball game alone.

I happen to sit next to a senior investment banker from New York City.

He’s on business by himself, and we start chatting.

We talk baseball, the stock market, life, and he makes fun of the fact I’m not allowed to have a beer at a baseball game.

Kindest person you can ever meet.

As the game concludes, he hands me his business card.

“You seem really motivated and you have a good head on your shoulders. Call me when you graduate from college.”

I look down at the business card.

I think the most incredible part of all of this is that Phil, at times despite himself, somehow just pitted the commissioner of a professional sports league against the benefactor of a sovereign wealth fund, got them to agree on a multi-billion (?) dollar deal, walked away with $200M himself and also nearly won the Masters in the middle of it all.

He certainly could not have envisioned it playing out like it did, and burned some bridges he may never rebuild, but it's undeniable that he reshaped the future of golf in a very substantial way.
