As someone who regularly goes to Premier League games, I think allowing alcohol in the stands is a terrible idea.

Matches are generally decent affairs these days, even if there’s still a bit of argy-bargy. Letting people drink throughout the game will inevitably mean more trouble. It also means people constantly getting up for pints, squeezing past you on the way back, spilling drinks and blocking your view.

It feels like a patronising attempt to win working-class support by assuming football fans just want to drink more. Who’s actually asking for this? The rule has worked for years. Leave it alone.

The most significant revelation is the contempt Farage shows, in private, for working people, the very folk who are fuelling his popularity.
