@MiguelDelaney Completely. Belgium would have won anyway, but the absolute circus Trump created cannot have helped the US - so a sporting as well as complete moral failure.
@JamesSurowiecki That's why I said within the tournament. Ronaldo also at least served one game. But yes the Ronaldo decision was also disgraceful and I guess paved the way for this.
@jbarro Nah anybody paying attention and who has even a passing interest in corruption should be appalled by this. Perfect illustration of how morally vacant people have become that they can't even spot, or care about, the obvious stuff anymore.
@TomMcTague And a WC that in many ways had been a more positive expression, instantly becomes always and forever associated with corruption, venality and the complete abuse of power. And shocking how many Americans don't see how this reflects everything that has happened in last ten years.
@SebSB That's the most surprising part of this - the lack of realization over how this would be perceived and the strength of feeling it would provoke. Absolutely catastrophic for their legitimacy.
@PeterHamby No it wasn't. It was a borderline call. Happens all the time in football. most teams get on with it. The US cried to FIFA and have embarrassed themselves. Unprecedented and pathetic
@ProfBank The very wording released by FIFA "similar nature and gravity" is very telling and makes a mockery of the whole thing. I've watched football for 40 years and never seen anything as blatantly ridiculous
