@JoshKnifeFinger@SpencerJCox You're arguing against an extreme position that no one holds. We were talking about a toy, not replacing parents with an AI mom and dad.
Nothing should be entirely outsourced to AI (especially parenting). That doesn't mean there's no way to utilize it for their benefit.
Do you have confidence that the most regulation-happy states would follow that line of thinking? Some of the early proposed regulation coming from California was creating an insane situation for any company trying to release a model.
My concern wouldn't be with regulations coming from Utah. It's that Google or OpenAI would have to either bend to the most aggressive state regulations or try to provide unique custom models and deploy them specifically for each state's individual regulations. Either way it slows innovation and progress.
It feels like we should be able to come together as a country and apply an appropriate set of regulations at the federal level to find a balance of safety without creating an insurmountable amount of red tape that China absolutely won't have to deal with.
@tombibbys@GovCox Certainly not by slowing down progress by forcing companies to appease the most aggressive state’s regulations. That just means that China gets to figure it out
China has a serious demographics problem. Within the next decade there won’t be enough people in the working class to support all the retirees. They also have a serious issue with so much of the wealth of the country having been invested into mega housing projects that sit unfinished and empty. They rely significantly more on imports for critical needs than the US does. They stand to lose a hell of a lot more from global trade collapse than the US. But sure… “dark factories” means the race is over
@c0XhHxvylL@GovCox How so? Why do you think the country is collectively investing more money than has ever been directed towards one initiative in the history of the planet?
@YerGonnaLive@GovCox I’m not talking about racing towards a magical ai overlord that will solve all our problems. I’m talking about the very real military and economic advantage that will come along with this clearly rapidly advancing technology. You think we’ve already lost that race?
@DylanEMHolland@GovCox Have you seen what Anduril is doing with the drone jets they are building to accompany fighter jets? I assure you it is a lot more than openAI making a cute anime picture of your family.
@farzyness I don't think it's necessarily "hoarding", but it is an obvious move in result of the (more likely than not) scenario where China moves on Taiwan within the next 2-5 years.
I think that’s a good parallel. But I also hesitate to agree with any stance that says AI shouldn’t be used at all with writing. Imagine how much better you could have mastered long division if you had a gold-medal math Olympiad personal tutor to personally guide your learning. We need to embrace ai as a learning tool and not an output generator.
