Official statement from the Instagram of the U of R Women’s Centre on the events at tonight’s meeting:
Tonight, the UR Women's Centre AGM was prematurely interrupted when certain individuals refused to let me speak. We had barely gotten through the blessing offered by our special guest, Knowledge Keeper Kenny Awasis, when disruptions began-not only were individuals bold enough to come up to our table DURING the blessing to demand that we "hurry up because most people are fasting," others thought it was appropriate to take videos is incredibly disrespectful and in poor taste, at minimum.
I am genuinely confused as to how someone can think they can walk into a meeting as a guest and attempt to take control. Please have some humility and respect those around you. I understand that people are passionate, but never in a million years would I go into a Gurdwara and interrupt a person of religious authority because I was hungry. And let's be clear-1, am Muslim, and I, too, fast and have done so since 2002. If it's time for Iftar, I put a date in my mouth, take a sip of water, and keep my mouth shut. Who do you think you are to interrupt a blessing from OUR special invited guest? It is, quite frankly, disgusting. We, the URWC BOD do not tolerate this behaviour.
And while we're here, I want to clarify: the individuals who disrupted the proceedings were South Asian nationals, not Middle Eastern, nor were they Muslim. One person interrupted the Elder, claiming they needed to "break their fast," but they were neither fasting nor Muslim.
That being said, this is not about race or religion, and I fear the conversation may take a turn that unfairly impacts my hijabi sisters, who always bear the brunt of these kinds of situations. I implore you not to assume things about people based on appearances-what is in the heart is hidden and only revealed through actions like those we saw tonight.
The violence and disruption we witnessed were rooted in misogyny, plain and simple.
This incident is a stark reminder of why we need safe spaces for women students of all backgrounds. Ensuring safety and respect for women is not up for debate, And while we're here, I want to clarify: the individuals who disrupted the proceedings were South Asian nationals, not Middle Eastern, nor were they Muslim. I am the woman who took my rapist to court and won. I am the woman who took action against my rapist’s lawyer for traumatising me in court and won. I am the woman who is now going to receive compensation from said lawyer for what he did. The lesson: don’t underestimate women 👊🏽
