Average consumer prices are up a cumulative 5.1% since the month Trump returned to office. As of June, they were up 3.5% since the previous June, exceeding the 3.0% year-over-year rate Trump inherited.

It’s true prices fell 0.4% between May and June as gas prices fell after the Iran war-related spike, but now gas prices are rising again; regardless, “nobody else could do it” is an interesting claim about a decline from a spike caused by the president’s own war.

This is not complicated.

Trump sued the IRS. He also runs the IRS. It is an agency of the executive branch he controls as president.

Then he settled with himself. Sweeping tax immunity for him and his companies, plus up to $1.8 billion in taxpayer money set aside for so-called “victims” including the January 6 rioters he has spent years defending and pardoning, some of whom assaulted police officers.

I’m glad a federal judge just threw the whole thing out.

Trump and the IRS were never actually on opposite sides, which the Constitution requires in a real lawsuit. I’m also glad she referred the lawyers to state bar authorities for possible ethics violations.

Where are my Republican colleagues speaking out against this whole corrupt scheme? The rule of law means nothing if it vanishes the moment it becomes politically inconvenient.

That is the Senator Graham I will remember today. Not because I have forgotten what came after. Because in that memory there is hope. Hope for a country where brothers can fight like hell over policy and still share a meal, and a laugh, and the loss of the people they love.

I will choose to remember the time before Trump. Because I believe in an America after Trump.
