Reading these predictions from early 2019 definitely have a different impact after the election. It was concerning to read this, even if not all the predictions came true, and makes me a bit worried to see what will come in the next months, on Inauguration Day and afterwards.

I’m interested to see how/if Trump’s loss will impact law and order politics. His loss is a loss for some aspects of his platform, but I think it may be to hopeful to think they will all together go away.

this reminded me of Coates’s idea of taking the Black body, as well as the trials for drug crimes in Alexander’s book. I’m not an expert on the law and know that discrimination is often legal, but I thought of how an emergency order is not needed to take Black people’s rights

I was kind of confused by this, because will I do know that slavery is now illegal and the KKK less violent, I read this and felt like it assumed the state was not until recently a violent actor, which I do not think is true.

This reminds me of the arguments some people use when talking about police violence against innocent people that they could have avoided being killed by complying. Both place responsibility on the victim to make usually White people feel better.

@annabel_smoot I am inclined to believe it is support because of its racism, especially because this phrase is often used by “blue lives matter supporters” which is in direct response to the Black Lives Matter movement targeting racism.

I thought this was a great argument. It seems very logical how slavery led to Jim Crow, but the common argument that racism ended with Jim Crown isn’t logical.

I don’t understand how privatization is a solution here. The patients would still be unable to pay, so the funding wouldn’t change much and therefore there still wouldn’t be money to fund the necessary changes.
