Navaratri begins for me the moment the bommai boxes are opened. Those old dolls, some decades old, have such a lovely, familiar smell of their own. I wish I could bottle it. Mixed with the frankincense wafting through the house, it is the smell I associate with this time of year.
Then comes the arranging, rearranging, and finding a place for every Devi and Devatha. Hours pass, and there is always one more thing to adjust. But finally, sitting before the golu, tired and happy, I remember why I love doing this every year. The hut feels full in the nicest possible way.
