בשנת 1989, דוד שלי עבר לארה"ב במטרה להיות הישראלי הראשון שעושה דוקטורט ומתמחה בחקר העתיד. מכל המקומות בעולם, הוא בחר דווקא באוניברסיטת מינסוטה.
כדי לממן את הלימודים, הוא חיפש עבודה בקהילה היהודית והתחיל ללמד ב-JCC. עם הזמן, המנהל שם התחבר אליו, ובזכותו גם התאהב ביהדות מרוקו - המורשת שדוד שלי הביא מהבית.
בוקר אחד, המנהל מזמן אותו למשרד ואומר: "קיבלתי משהו שאתה חייב לשמוע—קלטת עם פיוטים שהוקלטו בבתי כנסת במרוקו."
הקלטת מתחילה להתנגן, ותוך שניות דוד שלי פורץ בבכי.
המנהל, מבוהל, שואל: "מה קרה?"
דוד שלי עונה: "הפייטן הזה. זה אבא שלי. הוא נפטר לפני שנה".

The Courageous Amit Soussana tells the @nytimes of how she was sexually assaulted while being held captive by Hamas. The 40-year-old lawyer says that her guard started asking her questions about her sex life and when her period is due. He would go inside the room where she was kept, lift up her shirt, and touch her. Later, while she was in the shower, he attacked her at gunpoint and dragged her to a child's room, where - on a child's bed - he forced her to perform a sexual act on him.

Batya, a resident of Kibbutz Kfar Aza, a photographer & a peace activist, struck up a friendship with a Gazan photographer.

He took pictures of Gaza & she of her village. They uploaded them together in a joint exhibition where over 10,000 people viewed their images. They even had plans for a joint exhibit in San Diego.

On October 7th, her “friend” called, asking if there were Israeli soldiers nearby, asking where she was and how many she sees.

That's when Batya realized that her "friend" was not her friend nor a peace activist, but rather collecting information on herself and her village for Hamas. He had been passing along her previous photos of her Kibbutz to Hamas.

השנה היא 2019. אני זוכרת היטב את היום ההוא שבו סשה ברון כהן נתן נאום מדהים על האופן שבו פייסבוק והרשתות החברתיות מעודדות אנטישמיות ופשעי שנאה. נדב איל יצא מדסק החוץ ואמר: אתם חייבים לראות את זה, זה נאום מדהים וחשוב, וצריך ללמוד אותו.
במובן מסוים מאוד התרגשנו מהנאום הזה. זאת הייתה הפעם הראשונה שבה סשה ברון כהן דיבר בשמו, ולא כאחת הדמויות שלו כפי שנהג תמיד לעשות. הוא בא כסשה, ולא כאף דמות, כי הוא רצה לתת בשורה חדשה, הוא רצה שיקשיבו היטב. והוא ניצל את המעמד הכל כך מיוחד וראשוני הזה כדי לחשוף משהו שמתחיל לבעבע. הופתעתי אז מהאומץ של יוצר שיוצא נגד פייסבוק והפלטפורמות שהוא נשען עליהן בקריירה - ובעיקר הופתעתי מהדברים שהיו אז כל כך ראשוניים בכנות והישירות שלהם.

כבר כמה ימים שאני חושבת על הנאום ההוא של סשה ברון כהן. כמה הוא צדק. איך זיהה אז את התופעה שגורמת היום לטינאייג׳רים באמריקה להתלהב מאוסאמה בן לאדן. עכשיו אני כאן, בארצות-הברית, רואה במו עיניי את ההשלכות ההרסניות של התפרצות האנטישמיות ברשתות החברתיות. זה התחיל ויראלי, ברשת, אבל היום זה פיזית מתחת לבית שלי, ברחוב. אלה שלטים קרועים של חטופים, אלה צלבי קרס שאני רואה בעיניים בטיימס סקוור ואלה קריאות לאינתיפאדה שאני שומעת באוזניי.

הלילה סשה ברון כהן השתתף בשיחה עם בכירי טיקטוק, יחד עם עוד כמה סלבס אמריקאים, והטיח בהם שהם מגדלים אצלם את התנועה האנטישמית הגדולה ביותר מאז הנאציזם. זה קורה, כמובן, בגלל האלגוריתם שמקדם תכנים אנטישמיים. ״תתביישו לכם״, הוא אמר להם, תוך שהוא ואחרים מבקרים אותם על כך שלא חסמו באפליקציה תגובות כמו ״היטלר צדק״, ו״אני מקווה שאתם תסיימו כמו אנה פראנק״.

כולנו צריכים להיאבק בזה ביחד. האנטישמיות היא וירוס שמתפרץ ומתפשט במהירות, אנחנו לא יכולים לעמוד מנגד. חלק מהמאבק הוא לשים על השולחן את הבעיה, להצביע עליה, כמו שעשה אז סשה ברון כהן, כבר ב-2019. צריך לטפל בשורש שלה. והשורש שלה נמצא בידיים של אנשים שרוצים לעשות כסף מתוכן ויראלי. ותוכן ויראלי זה הרבה פעמים תוכן אלים, קונספירציות מטורללות ואנטישמיות. לא רק סשה צריך לעשות שיחות כאלה, גם ישראל ונציגיה. ויש גם אותנו, חלק מהמאבק הוא להעלות תכנים משלנו, באנגלית.

Hamas released a video of her yesterday being held underground in Gaza.

They have executed her.

13.11. 8 years ago today, ISIS terrorists murdered 130 people at various locations in Paris. Mainly, in the Bataclan Theatre where 90 concert goers were massacred.
I was there the following morning, reporting, same as I do in every major European event for more than a decade.
I remember the absolute shock and stress. I remember President Hollande declaring that this was an act of war.
I remember constant flow of people lighting candles, laying flowers and paying respect for the dead.
I remember the international empathy and sympathy, the feeling that all of us - are in this together. That this time it was the Parisian Bataclan but it could have been anywhere else.
I remember ISIS blaming the French airstrikes in Syria and Iraq for the attack. The Syrian President, Assad, while condemning ISIS, saying that the French support of the Syrian rebels had some blame.
I remember France declaring a state of emergency, giving unprecedented powers to the police. It then went to war halfway across the world. Bombing large areas in Syria and Iraq while operating in French neighbourhoods and cities.

What I don’t remember, though, is anyone else justifying the ISIS attacks or saying that France contributed by its actions prior.
I don’t remember people tearing up flowers and destroying corners of remembrance. I don’t remember many who denied what happened.
I don’t remember mass protests calling to stop the war against ISIS. No one said all French people are murderers or that Hitler should have finished the job in france. Nor did anyone brush off ISIS threats to keep attacking France over and over again.
I don’t remember students, professors, or humanitarians chanting that France doesn’t have a right to exist.

It’s true, history didn’t start on October 7th, it’s much more complex and nuanced than most of the debate currently holds.
You have criticism about Israel? Go ahead. I’m the last person to cancel criticism by automatically categorising it as antisemitism.
BTW, many Israelis are critical of the current government. You know what some of the most fiercest Israelis opposing the government are doing now? Being held hostage in Gaza. Without Red Cross visits, while their families are worried sick not knowing if they’re dead or alive.
Israel, like any other country, is far from being perfect but to act like the 260 Nova music-festival goers lives are different and less equal to the 90 concert-goers in Paris is not a matter of being antisemite or anti-Israeli, it’s just not being a decent human being.

This recently revealed documentation from a gas station near Sderot on October 7th shows how a group of terrorists tried to break into the gas station and gave up after they failed.
What the terrorists didn’t know is that there were 14 Jews inside the station at the time who fled there, and on duty at the station at the time was an Israeli Arab guy named Masad, who smuggled them in, locked the station, and hid them inside. He saved their lives. What a hero!

An open letter from faculty at Columbia University. Signed by 2x more faculty than the prior letter to which this is a forthright and effective rejoinder:

"There is no justification for raping and murdering ordinary citizens in front of their families, mutilating babies, decapitating people, using automatic weapons and grenades to hunt down and murder young people at a music festival celebrating peace, burning families alive, kidnapping and taking hostages (including vulnerable populations of elderly, people with disabilities, and young children), parading women hostages in front of chanting crowds, and proudly documenting these nightmarish scenes on social media. We are horrified that anyone would celebrate these monstrous attacks or, as some members of the Columbia faculty have done in a recent letter, try to “recontextualize” them as a “salvo,” as the "exercise of a right to resist" occupation, or as “military action.” We are astonished that anyone at Columbia would try to legitimize an organization that shares none of the University’s core values of democracy, human rights, or the rule of law.  Any civilian loss of life during war is awful but, as colleagues on the faculty acknowledged in the letter mentioned above, the law of war clearly distinguishes between tragic but incidental civilian death and suffering, on one hand, and the deliberate targeting of civilians, on the other. We feel sorrow for all civilians who are killed or suffering in this war, including so many in Gaza. Yet whatever one thinks of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict or of Israeli policies, Hamas’s genocidal massacre was an act of terror and cannot be justified, or its true purpose obscured with euphemisms and oblique references. We ask the entire University community to condemn the Hamas attack unambiguously. We doubt anyone would try to justify this sort of atrocity if it were directed against the residents of a nation other than Israel."

Israel Chana, a private security guard, was returning from his birthday party in the early hours of October 7th, when he and his girlfriend were caught in a barrage of Hamas rockets near their home. They hid in a nearby shelter, where they saw terrorists roaming their neighborhood streets and firing at passerby's.

Israel ran home, took his firearm and ran out to confront the terrorists in his flipflops, despite the pleas of his mother and girlfriend. He managed to stop terrorists from entering homes, and probably saved the entire neighborhood of Mishor Hagefen in Ofakim before he was killed. When his family sat Shiva after his death, strangers showed up to thank the family for his bravery that saved their lives.
