Happy Pi day from @CCNY_Science! Favorites this year were the key lime pie and the Milk Bar pie. Thanks to Chris Li for setting up such a fun event. I think they're still going if you want some pie.
I went into elastin research because I thought it would be fun to do NMR on an entropic spring driven by configurational entropy loss like rubber. But it's not! The entropic recoil is the result of hydrophobic exposure upon stretching. Cool mechanism!
We just put our latest #elastin manuscript up on bioaRxiv. Great work, Nour! And it's always both fun and a learning experience to work with Richard Wittebort.

@AmyPalmerZinc I get why everyone else doesn't miss theirs, but I have found having a 212 number really useful. People are much more likely to answer when I call from there as opposed to my randoid cell phone number.
Here's what today's Close Approach looks like:

🌎Earth in the middle, with LEO satellites also shown.

It is Perihelion today - when the Earth is the closest to the sun during an orbit. But, since our orbit is oh-so circular (e = 0.0167) it can be hard to notice. Here's a made up Earth orbit on the right with an eccentricity e = 0.35 in sync with our real one, on the left.
Hell yeah: https://t.co/PUqefcgpA0 People often look at me like I'm crazy when I tell them the subway is my favorite part of NYC... but c'mon: it's a whole train network, under the ground (!), that takes you anywhere in the city you wanna go, 24/7, for less than a cup of coffee!
Anne-Frances Miller from @ukychem came to @CCNY_Science on Monday to talk to our lab about electron bifurcation in flavin enzymes. Really cool stuff that's going to be important moving forward in enzyme design for renewable energy.
What a great time at the first in-person Gibbs conference since 2019. Super interesting biophysics in a beautiful setting. (I especially enjoyed the campfire s’mores.) Thanks to @LuciusLab, James Horn and all the other organizers!
Stories like these are so valuable.
There will always be a guy who says “Women just don’t want to go into those careers. Maybe people have different preferences?, but when you see the reality, it’s instantly clear how far from a free choice/preference the decision actually is.
