đ Machakos, Kenya â Today, we convened with the @NairobiCityGov Health Management Team to validate stocktake findings on Strengthening Nurturing Care for Early Childhood Development (NCfECD) in Primary Health Care (PHC). The initiative is prioritising the first 1,000 days of life with deeper emphasis on promoting responsive caregiving, safety & security, opportunities for early learning, and developmental monitoring in Primary Health Care.
Evidence from routine Primary Health Care (PHC) touchpoints - Antenatal Care (ANC)/ Postnatal Care (PNC), immunisation & Child Welfare Clinics, and community health services confirms that these platforms consistently reach families. To make the nurturing care routine sustainable and measurable, we agreed that we must:
â Deploy the Nurturing Care for Early Childhood Development (NCfECD) package at each PHC touchpoint
â Embed simple documentation prompts in routine tools and use them in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) and supervision
â Strengthen health workforce capacity through training and mentorship targeting health providers and Community Health Promoters â especially in developmental monitoring and counselling, responsive caregiving and caregiver well-being, early learning, safety, and security
â Strengthen safety and security screening with clear referral pathways and feedback loops
â Demonstrate to caregivers early stimulation and learning activities such as singing, communicating, and playing to improve bonding and social-emotional learning skills for children
â Equip child-friendly spaces with locally available play materials
â Plan for sustainable county financing and transition from partner-supported inputs to county ownership
Using @WHOâs health systems building blocks (Leadership & Governance, Health Information Systems, Health Workforce, Service Delivery, Health Products and Technologies, Financing), stakeholders validated findings, prioritised actions, and defined roles across county teams, facilities, and community structures.
𧊠Milestones achieved:
â˘â â Consensus on priority actions to promote Nurturing Care in Primary Health Care (PHC)
â˘â â Alignment with Nurturing Care for Early Childhood Development (NCfECD) in PHC scale-up work to sustain momentum and coherence
â˘â â Consensus on Nurturing Care for Early Childhood Development (NCfECD) in Primary Health Care (PHC) Action Plan outline with timelines, indicators, accountability, and stakeholder mapping
âĄď¸ Whatâs next?
â˘â â Finalise the county-owned action plan
â˘â â Embed documentation prompts in routine service delivery tools
â˘â â Initiate targeted mentorship for providers and Community Health Promoters (CHP)
â˘â â Establish light-touch progress reviews through existing PHC and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) forums, focusing on measurable improvements in caregiver coaching, safety and security, developmental monitoring, and support for early learning.
