“When you lock the gates of a school, you are not just closing a building; you are sealing the door to a family’s future,” says Zalfa Mohammadi, an education activist who has spent years witnessing the transformative power of a classroom. Through her work organizing art exhibitions and workshops, Mohammadi says she has seen firsthand the moment when a girl stops second-guessing herself and begins to speak as if she expects to be heard.

For Sohila Sakhizada, a veteran of the theatre since the age of twelve, the transition from the streets of Kabul to the spotlights of France has felt like a surreal continuation of a single, long performance. “I realized that not much has fundamentally changed for me,” Sakhizada explains, her voice carrying the weariness of a thousand rehearsals. “I have the same feeling I had back in Afghanistan. I am simply in a different place, speaking a different language, but I still feel as though I am standing on stage in Kabul.”

Hassan Ati is thirty-one years old, but he no longer measures his life in birthdays. He measures it in the distance between ‘no longer’ and ‘not yet’.

Since 2015, Hassan has lived in Indonesia, a country known to tourists as a lush, emerald paradise, but known to Hassan and thousands of other refugees as a ‘green hell’.

In this place of absolute suspension, in the quiet violence of waiting, Hassan found a camera—or perhaps the camera found him.

The crisis became unbearable after the Taliban seized Afghanistan in late 2021. Cut off from family and overwhelmed by “horrifying and scattered news,” Khodadad reached his breaking point. After days without sleep and being blocked on WhatsApp by a local aid worker he desperately tried to contact, he lost control.

Under severe mental and psychological pressure, Khodadad abandoned thoughts of ending his own life. Instead, he chose a powerful, silent protest: he sewed his lips together to expose the humanitarian tragedy in what he calls the “Green Hell of Indonesia,” hoping that their silent voice would finally reach the world.
