This segment (in Rebel Queen https://t.co/H9GmDZTWoO) is about my first experience with Bobby and Fischer Random.
The game appealed to me right away. For one thing, my playing style has always relied more on over-the-board calculation and inventiveness than on home preparation. But more important, Fischer Random spoke to my belief in chess as a great equalizer; as a sport in which one's age, gender, wealth, or background has no relevance. All that matters is that one finds the right moves and plays them at the right moment.
Bobby understood this more than most great players. Like me, he had come from modest means, and spent his career battling a chess establishment that was committed to bringing him down, even if it meant breaking the rules. We were kindred spirits in this way, and we sensed it from our first conversation. He had triumphed in the face of overwhelming resistance, and managed to change the game of chess more than anyone in modern history. I was attempting to do the same.
We played just one game of Fischer Random that afternoon. And although I was new to this strange chess variant, I played Bobby to a draw. As we were finishing up, there was one question I couldn't help but ask.
"So Bobby," I said, "do you still believe you can defeat any woman in the world, even giving knight odds?"
I knew what his answer would be. But I wanted to hear it for myself.
"Not anymore," he said.
That moment has stayed with me. Not because I had held my own with the great Bobby Fischer. But because I changed the mind of one of the most stubborn men I would ever meet. And I did it the only way I knew how: by removing any doubt that I -- a woman -- was among the best in the world.
Of course, I hadn't come to Kanjiza to earn his approval, or even his respect. I came mainly out of curiosity. I wanted to see for myself what had become of this great champion. And while I genuinely enjoyed his company, I was deeply saddened by his situation.

Ukrainian mathematician Maryna Viazovska solved a problem that had puzzled mathematicians for over 400 years. Even Johannes Kepler and Isaac Newton couldn’t crack it.
We live in a three-dimensional world, but Maryna solved a puzzle in an eight-dimensional space—something that’s very hard even to imagine.
She was born in Kyiv, studied at Taras Shevchenko University, worked in Bonn and Berlin, and at just 33 became a professor in Lausanne.
So what was the problem? It’s about how to pack identical spheres as tightly as possible in space. This question was first asked by Kepler back in 1611. Over time, scientists found answers for two and three dimensions—but not for eight.
Maryna proved that in eight dimensions, the densest packing is formed by a special mathematical structure called a lattice. What’s even more amazing is that she did it in just 23 pages, while earlier attempts took hundreds.
In 2022, she was awarded the Fields Medal, the most prestigious prize in mathematics. She became only the second woman in history to receive it.
Today, Maryna Viazovska works in Lausanne, supports Ukrainian mathematicians, and brings pride to Ukraine with her achievements.
A teenage prodigy in quantum physics is aiming to tackle one of science’s biggest challenges: human aging.
Laurent Simons earned his PhD in quantum physics from the University of Antwerp at just 15. Rather than slowing down, he has already begun a second doctorate, this time focusing on medical science and artificial intelligence.
His long-term ambition is to better understand aging and disease, with the hope of helping extend healthy human lifespan. He has described death as a complex “puzzle,” made up of many interconnected pieces across biology, physics, and engineering. His strategy is to study these layers together, using AI to analyze biological systems and identify patterns that would be difficult to detect otherwise.
Simons’ academic journey has been unusually fast. He completed high school by age 8, finished a bachelor’s degree at 12, and went on to earn both a master’s and PhD in quantum physics years ahead of typical timelines. His doctoral work explored advanced topics like Bose–Einstein condensates, where atoms behave as a single quantum system at extremely low temperatures.
Although highly theoretical, this research underpins technologies such as quantum computing and precision measurement. Now, his focus is shifting toward biology and medicine.
In AI-driven healthcare, researchers are already using machine learning to improve early disease detection, model protein structures, and accelerate drug development. In the field of aging, scientists are investigating ways to reduce cellular damage, eliminate dysfunctional cells, and better understand how the body changes over time.
However, experts stress that “solving aging” is extraordinarily complex. While lifespan extension has been achieved in simple organisms, applying those findings to humans remains a major scientific hurdle.
Simons himself acknowledges that meaningful progress could take decades. Even so, his path reflects a broader trend in science—where breakthroughs are increasingly happening at the intersection of disciplines, and younger researchers are setting ambitious, long-term goals.

"15-year-old genius sets his sights on solving human immortality." Brighter Side.
Si eres venezolano y estás fuera, te entiendo.
