One day, he arrived late to a class taught by Professor Jerzy Neyman. When he entered the classroom, he saw three problems written on the board. He assumed they were homework and copied them down.
After class, Dantzig started working on the problems. He solved two of them easily, but the third one was much harder. He kept working on it and finally finished it.
About six weeks later, on a Sunday morning, Dantzig was woken up by someone knocking on his door. When he opened it, he saw Professor Neyman holding some papers. Neyman was very excited and said he had written an introduction to one of Dantzig’s papers and wanted him to check it so it could be published.
It turned out that two of the problems on the board were not homework at all. They were well-known unsolved problems in statistics. Dantzig had solved them without knowing they were unsolved.
Later, when Dantzig needed a topic for his thesis, Neyman suggested that he submit those solutions. They were accepted as his thesis.

On The Big Bang Theory, Sheldon Cooper called 73 the best number. It sounds like a joke — but the math behind it is surprisingly beautiful.
First, 73 is a prime number. But it also holds a special spot in the list of primes. If you count them one by one, 73 turns out to be the 21st prime number. Now flip the digits of 73 and you get 37 which is the 12th prime number (21 reversed becomes 12).
Second, take the number 21 and factor it: 21 = 7 × 3. Those are the exact digits that make 73.
And finally, write 73 in binary (the language computers use): 1001001. Read it left to right or right to left — it’s the same. That makes it a binary palindrome.
