An exchange that wants to trade in its own shares after getting listed has reportedly welcomed 200+ stocks from another exchange under its “Permitted to Trade” route.

In the excitement to showcase this grand new strategy, though, someone may have forgotten to check the guest list.

A basic review shows that fewer than 15% of these stocks meet the exchange’s own listing criteria.

Rules are apparently like dress codes, strictly applicable until you’re in a hurry to fill the room. 😉

But seriously, where does corporate governance fit into all of this?

Imagine the Oscars where a film is nominated for an award, but the jury is also part of that film’s production team.

And what if that film isn’t doing well?

Would you expect the jury to be completely impartial?

That’s the basic question when an exchange is allowed to facilitate trading in its own shares.

The exchange becomes the issuer, the marketplace and the overseer of trading in its own securities.

Isn’t that clear conflict of interest?

For the common investor, the principle is simple:

The jury should not be a contestant. And the rules should be the same for everyone.

If the umpire is also a player, can the game truly be seen as fair?

Market integrity and governance should never be compromised by technical interpretations of the rules.
