Remember, even an SHO who can show a bit of character has the power to refuse to do the wrong thing.

What SHO Imranuddin did, in refusing to file a fake FIR against innocent women, is significant - and should be food for thought for many more senior officers.

The fake FIR, against the women in Murad Saeed's family, crosses lines that have not and must not be crossed in KP and Pashtun society. It must be condemned unequivocally.

It's funny that in Pakistan, politicians accept fake cases and spells in jail for political motives as part of the job description.

In KP, the line never crossed is for the women who aren't involved in politics to be dragged into this. These fake FIRs against women are not only illegal, but also against the code of ethics of our society. There is a reason; the repercussions in a society where honour counts above all else are not somewhere anyone should want to go.

Imranuddin had the courage to resist crossing that line. How many more senior officers across the country can look themselves in the mirror and say the same thing?

Imran Khan: patriotism and loyalty.

Of all the charges and accusations levelled against Imran Khan, most ironic are the ones questioning his patriotism or loyalty to the state. Did Imran Khan betray the oath of his office with the cipher? Could Imran Khan effectively "wage war" against the institutions of the state? Could any of this be possible?

Amongst all of Pakistan's mainstream political leaders, Imran Khan is the most intensely and fiercely patriotic, and there is over half a century of his public life to prove it, not just his 27 years in politics.

You can see Imran Khan's patriotism throughout his 21 year long cricket career. It is not the success he obtained for Pakistan on the field that I'm talking about, but the fact that he continuously anchored towards Pakistan even when he was practically settled in the UK through his cricket career. Pick up interviews from this time, through those years of cricketing fame, and you will see Imran Khan talk of his roots in Pakistan and how that will always define who he is. Even then, he can see his future nowhere else. Many of his contemporaries and successors as cricketers ultimately went the route of settling abroad and obtaining foreign citizenship. Some of these players are legends. That is not to say they don't care about Pakistan being foreign citizens. But anyone who knows Imran Khan knows the fire for Pakistan runs deep inside him. Always has. That is why, the moment his career finished, he left the UK to return to Pakistan.

You can see the nature and intensity of Imran Khan's patriotism through his philanthropic work. Why build a cancer hospital? Why create Naml university? The answer lies in what is consistent in the two institutions. It is the fact that they are focused on the 99%, the segment of Pakistan for whom the country and its systems don't work. Both projects were conceived to fill in the failures of the state in providing for its people. And that is the crux of it. Imran Khan's patriotism is anchored in the people of Pakistan. Not in those of us who can make the state work for themselves because we are privileged, but in creating a fairer state for everyone. This, I believe, comes both from his faith in God, as well as his burning passion to see Pakistan as a successful state.

It is this same patriotism that Imran Khan's politics also revolves around; has always revolved around; in fighting for a better, fairer state for 240 million people. Maybe this is why an incredible majority of our youth follow this man who is 71. Maybe this is why, despite an 18 month long unprecedented campaign, Imran Khan's popularity amongst the masses is greater than ever; despite the fake charges of corruption; despite the media campaigns and blackouts; despite the use of brute force by the state against his supporters; despite the forced press conferences and scripted interviews; despite jail.

Another key aspect of Imran Khan's patriotism that more pragmatic politicians or leaders tend not to understand is his belief that Pakistan needs to be truly independent in its actions. Whether it's the case of the cipher where a foreign diplomat threatens consequences if Imran Khan stays in power; whether it's his trip to Russia; whether it's the way he stood up to India after the Pulwama incident; whether its his outspoken positions on Palestine, Kashmir or other issues related to Islam's place in the world; or even in the past, whether it is his stance on Pakistan's position in the war on terror; it is Imran Khan's patriotism that drives his positions; that Pakistan should take its own decisions, in its own interests, and never compromise on its dignity as a sovereign country.

It is for similar reasons that Imran Khan cannot be against the institution of the military. In this singular objective of trying to transform Pakistan, I think Imran Khan knows that ultimately, reforming Pakistan will require the support of the military as an institution, and that given the external threats to Pakistan, a strong military is in Pakistan's best interests.

That is not to say that these positions cannot be legitimately criticized. I am sure that Imran Khan's critics can also find contradictions in what he has said or done. But then, all human beings are flawed. All institutions are imperfect. Everyone makes mistakes. And perhaps in Pakistan, we all make more mistakes than most.

And so, maybe it is better to look at any person through their qualities rather than their flaws. And on patriotism, loyalty and service to the country, and courage, Imran Khan will beat most; through the history of Pakistan.

When in doubt on issues such as this, it is always good to ask the people. In a state like Pakistan, one of the biggest mistakes we make is to underestimate the collective wisdom of the people. Maybe that is why historically, it has been so easy for us to discount the democratic principles enshrined in our constitution. Today, the people stand with Imran Khan, as proven by opinion poll after opinion poll, and by-election result after by-election result.

The campaign against Imran Khan will not hurt Imran Khan; regardless of the number of press conferences; regardless of the sentence he is given in the cipher case; regardless of the crackdown against PTI as a party; but it is hurting and harming Pakistan. Imran Khan will emerge from this, regardless of whom amongst us stand with him. Pakistan will emerge from this. Lets just hope, that the damage being done along the way doesn't take too long to repair.
