Even by the standards of a country ranking 157 of 180 nations in the World Press Freedom Index, the reaction of the authorities to the ‘Cockroach Janata Party’ is beyond extraordinary. The public response to that imaginative prank should have signalled to them a deep discontent, even distress, among young people. Instead, as The Indian Express reported, it was framed as jeopardising the country’s ‘national security’ and ‘posing a threat to the sovereignty of India.’ Decades ago, the Malaysian lawyer and poet Cecil Rajendra wrote this brilliant poem that captures the idiocy of it better than any pompous editorialising could (not that our ‘mainstream’ media would dare do even that much).

It is very disheartening to see prominent Dalit figures in Tamil Nadu like Pa. Ranjith and others arguing that TVK giving 7 ministerial berths to SCs will automatically bring social transformation on the ground. Stalin Rajangam has also expressed similar opinions. To many of us, this only shows that they are increasingly siding with TVK rather than standing independently for Dalit politics. Dalits are once again being reduced to political pawns through symbolic representation.

Let us look at a few facts. L. Murugan still holds a Union ministerial berth, but has that fundamentally changed the condition of Dalit communities? Dhanapal from Avinashi served as Legislative Assembly Speaker, yet structural caste realities did not disappear. So ministerial posts alone have nothing to do with emancipation. This is tokenism politics at its highest level. This is exactly what is meant when people say, “Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”

The reality is very different. The present electoral system itself rarely allows an assertive Dalit to independently contest and succeed politically. Babasaheb Ambedkar demanded separate electorates before the Poona Pact altered that path, and what we have today is a system where independent Dalit political assertion is structurally weakened.

As all of us know, in this election the votes for TVK were not primarily for the individual candidates, but for actor Vijay himself. Vijay openly campaigned saying, “Vote not for them, but for me.”

Now, after the election, TVK MLAs are uploading reels and videos showing visits to their constituencies. But in the last 10 days alone, there have reportedly been two honour killings, and not even one TVK MLA has visited the victims’ families or spoken strongly about caste violence.

What is even more disappointing is that Pa. Ranjith too is not questioning this silence. Instead, reducing such incidents merely to “love issues” erases the caste reality behind these killings. When caste is erased from honour killings, the structural violence and oppression behind them also get erased.

Now let us look at the DMK. The party fielded Dr. Gokilamani, a medical practitioner, and openly discussed her caste background while seeking votes. Had Dr. Gokilamani won, there could at least have been hope for an assertive Dalit voice with an independent social grounding to emerge politically. But that did not happen.

So whatever ministerial berths TVK has given today have little to do with actual transformation in Dalit communities. What we need is not mere representational politics or symbolic tokenism. What we need is a politics where every issue — caste oppression, honour killings, education, land rights, dignity, and social justice — is equally represented and addressed, regardless of the caste, gender, or religion of the person holding office.

In Telangana’s Nalgonda, parents seen queuing up from dawn outside Komatireddy Pratheek Government School for admissions.
