Statement by Advocate T. Narasimha Murthy to the Media on the alleged Illegal Demolition at Kogilu #Bengaluru

Advocate T. Narasimha Murthy, petitioner in the Kogilu demolition case, strongly condemned the illegal and inhumane demolition of slum dwellings carried out by officials of the @GBA_office and the Bengaluru District Administration, describing it as a grave violation of human rights and constitutional protections.

He stated that the demolitions were executed in complete disregard of law, procedure and basic humanity, prompting him to formally approach statutory bodies for immediate intervention. “I have filed detailed complaints before the Karnataka State Human Rights Commission, the Women’s Commission and the Child Rights Commission because this demolition amounts to a direct attack on women and children,” he said.

Highlighting the humanitarian crisis unfolding on the ground, Advocate Narasimha Murthy expressed deep concern over the safety and survival of displaced families. “Women are not safe even inside their homes in today’s society. Now they have been pushed onto the streets. One must ask—what is their fate now, and who is responsible for their safety?” he questioned.

He drew attention to the harsh and worsening weather conditions, stating that displaced women and children are being forced to endure extreme cold without shelter, bedding or basic protection. “Even in proper houses, people struggle to live comfortably without blankets and beds in this weather. Expecting families—especially children—to survive in the open is nothing short of cruelty,” he said.

Advocate Narasimha Murthy criticised the government for its lack of sensitivity, particularly towards children. “A state that claims to protect children cannot demolish their homes and abandon them to hunger, cold and fear. This reflects a complete absence of compassion and responsibility,” he asserted.

He further pointed out the selective nature of the demolition drive, alleging that authorities have deliberately targeted the poor while ignoring large-scale violations by the powerful. “Across the city, apartments, bungalows and commercial buildings have violated building laws and encroached on public land. Yet, not a single influential structure has been touched,” he said.

Referring to earlier demolition drives, he noted that several illegal constructions identified years ago were left untouched and continue to stand even today. “This exposes the hypocrisy of the system—laws are enforced only against the voiceless, never against those with money or influence,” he remarked.

Advocate Narasimha Murthy also questioned the broader political and governance vision behind such actions, stating that policies increasingly appear to be directed against the poor and marginalized, particularly minorities. “When governance consistently targets the weakest sections, it raises serious questions about intent, equality and justice,” he said.

He confirmed that the Human Rights Commission has already taken cognizance of the matter and that child protection authorities are also involved. “We are pursuing this case across all constitutional and statutory forums. Our objective is clear—accountability for those responsible and justice for the victims,” he said.

Concluding his statement, Advocate Narasimha Murthy expressed hope that institutional intervention would lead to relief and accountability. “These families deserve dignity, protection and justice. We will not allow this violation of human rights to be normalised or forgotten,” he said.
