Four Kurdish Political Prisoners to Join Kurdistan General Strike with Hunger Strike

Zeynab Jalalian, Varisheh Moradi, Sakineh Parvaneh, and Motlab Ahmadian, four Kurdish political prisoners held in Evin and Yazd prisons, have announced that they will go on hunger strike on Wednesday, September 16, in support of the general strike in Kurdistan. The action will take place on the fourth anniversary of the death of Jina Amini.

In a joint message, the four prisoners described striking as “the most civil form of protest” and said their hunger strike is an expression of solidarity with the general strike in Kurdistan and the values of the “Jin, Jiyan, Azadi” uprising.

The call for the September 16 general strike was issued by the Alliance of Political Parties of Iranian Kurdistan. So far, dozens of political parties, organizations, and civil society groups have announced their support for the strike.

Jina Amini (Jîna Emînî), born on 21 September 1999, was a 22-year-old Kurdish woman from Saqqez, Iran. After being arrested by Iran’s so-called morality police in Tehran, she suffered a severe brain injury in custody, fell into a coma, and died on 16 September 2022.

Her death sparked one of the largest protest movements in the modern history of Iran and Kurdistan, centred on the powerful slogan “Jin, Jiyan, Azadî” — “Woman, Life, Freedom”.

Jina’s name soon reached far beyond Iran and Kurdistan, becoming a global symbol of women’s resistance and the struggle for freedom and human dignity.

“Jin, Jiyan, Azadî”: From Its Kurdish Roots to the Manifesto of a Revolution

“Jin, Jiyan, Azadî” is more than a protest slogan. It is a political and social idea that emerged from the Kurdish freedom movement and the organised struggles of Kurdish women. The slogan gained global significance through the resistance of women in Rojava, particularly in the fight against ISIS. Following the state killing of Jina Amini, it became a shared language for millions of people across Rojhelat, Iran, and beyond in their struggle against authoritarianism, patriarchy, and discrimination.

During the 2022 uprising, “Jin, Jiyan, Azadî” was first chanted publicly on a mass scale at Jina Amini’s funeral in Saqqez. From there, it quickly spread to streets, universities, and other spaces of social resistance across Iran.

The power of the slogan lies in the connection between three fundamental ideas. “Jin” places women’s liberation at the centre of social transformation. “Jiyan” defends the right to a free, equal, and dignified life. “Azadî” connects individual liberation with collective and political freedom. Together, these three words offer a radical critique of the structures that reproduce gender domination, political repression, the denial of national identities, and centralized power.

The intellectual roots of the slogan can be found in the Kurdish freedom movement and the ideas of Abdullah Öcalan, who views women’s liberation not as a secondary issue but as a basic condition for the freedom of society. From this perspective, a society in which women are not free cannot be truly free or democratic. “Jin, Jiyan, Azadî” therefore goes beyond a limited demand. It offers a vision for liberating women, society, the land, and even men themselves from systems of domination.

The account of former political prisoner Atefeh Nabavi shows that the slogan was present in Iran long before the 2022 uprising:

“I first heard the slogan ‘Woman, Life, Freedom’ from Shirin Alam Holi in the women’s ward of Evin Prison. She had written ‘Jin, Jiyan, Azadî’ herself with a marker on the wall beside her bed—the same place where we fell asleep at night to Kurdish poetry and woke each morning to songs.”

Shirin Alam Holi was a young Kurdish woman who learned Persian in prison, endured torture, and became a symbol of resistance. On 9 May 2010, the Islamic Republic executed her in Evin Prison alongside Farzad Kamangar, Farhad Vakili, and Ali Heydarian. Her fate clearly reveals how political repression, gender oppression, and the denial of Kurdish identity intersect within the structure of the Islamic Republic.

Four years after the beginning of the “Jin, Jiyan, Azadî” Revolution, the slogan continues to represent a political horizon for moving beyond the Islamic Republic and building a democratic, pluralistic, and decentralized future—one in which women’s freedom, the rights of Iran’s different peoples, social justice, and democratic self-governance are inseparable. Millions may chant these words today, but the walls of Evin Prison heard them many years ago.

ZÜRİH – Zürih’teki Oberhalb der Hinteregg deport kampında zorla sınır dışı edilmek istenen Dilan Özgün ve beş çocuğu, kampta gösterilen direniş ve yapılan dayanışma çağrılarının ardından serbest bırakıldı. Ancak aileye deport işleminin yeniden uygulanacağının bildirildiği ve sınır dışı tehlikesinin devam ettiği öğrenildi.
Edinilen bilgilere göre İsviçre makamları, bu sabah Dilan Özgün ile beş çocuğunu zorla sınır dışı etmek üzere harekete geçti. Daha önce Bahar Yalçınkaya’nın da tutulduğu Oberhalb der Hinteregg kampındaki müdahale sırasında Özgün’ün kelepçelendiği ve şiddete maruz kaldığı görüntülere yansıdı.
Özgün ve çocukları sınır dışı işlemine karşı kampta direnirken, kamuoyuna da acil dayanışma çağrısı yapıldı. Tepkilerin ve dayanışmanın büyümesinin ardından deport işleminin o aşamada gerçekleştirilemediği, ailenin yeniden serbest bırakıldığı öğrenildi.
Sıkı kelepçe bileklerinde iz bıraktı
Müdahale sırasında uygulandığı belirtilen aşırı güç ve kelepçelerin çok sıkı bağlanması nedeniyle Dilan Özgün’ün bileklerinde belirgin şişlik, iz ve deformasyon oluştuğu görüldü.
Özgün ve beş çocuğunun serbest bırakılması memnuniyetle karşılanırken, aileye yönelik müdahale ve zor kullanma iddialarının açıklığa kavuşturulması çağrısı yapıldı.
Deport tehlikesi devam ediyor, direniş sürüyor
Ailenin serbest bırakılmasına rağmen deport kararının kaldırılmadığı ve yeniden sınır dışı edilmelerinin planlandığının kendilerine bildirildiği belirtildi. Bu nedenle Dilan Özgün ve çocukları açısından deport tehlikesi henüz sona ermiş değil.
Aile, sınır dışı girişimine karşı direnişini sürdürürken kamuoyuna ve dayanışma çevrelerine de desteği büyütme çağrısı yapıldı. Yaşananlar, deport kamplarında yürütülen direnişin ve dışarıdan gösterilen dayanışmanın önemini bir kez daha ortaya koydu.
