#BREAKING WHO says Marburg virus case detected in Uganda

In a major international effort to evaluate potential treatments for #Ebola disease due to Bundibugyo virus (BVD), the PARTNERS (Platform Adaptive Randomised Trial for New and Repurposed Filovirus TreatmentS) clinical trial has opened enrolment today for patients in the #DRC.

What does the trial do?
This trial will assess whether two therapies –
➡️ a monoclonal antibody (MBP134)
➡️ an antiviral medicine (remdesivir)
can improve survival among people diagnosed with BVD.
It will also evaluate whether combining the two provides additional benefits.

Who is behind it?
The trial, sponsored by the WHO, has been coordinated by the Institut National pour la Recherche Biomédicale (INRB) in the DRC, the @ITMantwerp Institute of Tropical Medicine in Belgium, and the @UniofOxford in the United Kingdom, in collaboration with international research, clinical and humanitarian partners, and supported by @AfricaCDC.

What can the trials help determine?
The PARTNERS trial is expected to assess whether these therapies can improve outcomes for patients with BVD and reduce deaths in affected communities.

Hi @DrJoeAbah Over the past 7 years, I've trained the most number of Tech professionals in Nigeria, and ran training programs. If the time allocated towards the intro to a field of their interest is 3 weeks, I think I'm in a great position to assist in designing what that experience will look like for people who want to go into Tech.
3 weeks is not enough but if the goal is to setup an introduction that won't confuse them after leaving the camp and something that's sustainable. I'm happy to support and do my path in making sure those students get maximum value during that period.

On camping, the approved proposal is two weeks of civic, leadership, and life skills training; two weeks of basic accounting and financial literacy, access to finance, business planning, and career mapping; and the last two weeks would be a short immersion into your area of interest. So, you may have read English but be really interested in tech, environment and climate, or the creative sector.

Camps will be certified and graded to ensure that they meet minimum standards. State governments will be given a grace period during which to ensure they meet the standards for infrastructure, accommodation, safety and security and healthcare.

Posting will ordinarily be done impersonally using an algorithm that considers factors like state of origin, state of residence, school attended, etc.

Posting to security flashpoints will be risk-sensitive and people who are not indigenes of those areas or are already residing in those areas should not be posted there.

Regarding the timing of commencement and wider consultation, the NYSC Act would need to be amended for the changes to take effect. This should include public consultations and public hearings. Every legislation passed and assented to is a product of a series of compromises.

#Hantavirus Update:

- All contacts of the two cases identified in South Africa at the beginning of the outbreak have completed their follow-up period, with no additional cases reported.

- Quarantine and follow-up periods have also been completed for everyone in Spain and the Netherlands, including the MV Hondius crew members.

- As of June 25, 30 contacts are still under follow-up.

- The total number of cases remains at 13, including three fatalities.

- The situation remains stable, and the outbreak is nearing its end.

A new study from England, #UK, has recorded zero deaths from #CervicalCancer among young women who were vaccinated against #HPV as girls.

Since @WHO made the call to action in May 2018, countries across the world are rolling out the WHO Global Strategy to Eliminate Cervical Cancer — by scaling up vaccination, screening and treatment.

And today, 165 countries have now introduced this lifesaving vaccine.

WHO has released its first-ever set of comprehensive guidelines for the clinical management of filovirus disease which include all Ebola and Marburg diseases.

Ebola disease, and Marburg disease are serious, and often fatal. There have been 72 outbreaks of Ebola and Marburg diseases reported in Africa since 1967, when Marburg virus was first discovered.

These guidelines translate lessons learned from recent disease outbreaks into evidence-based, clinical recommendations to improve patient survival and outcomes.
