Today @LSE_WPS, Professor @joannalewisnews hosted an event on Afghanistan, where I had the honour of speaking alongside Anton Steynberg, Senior Trial Lawyer at the @ICC, about the arrest warrants issued for the Taliban’s leaders.
In my remarks, I said:
Four years ago, the Taliban’s return to power marked a turning point in history—a dark day for Afghanistan, and a test for the global conscience. Yet today, while we remember that darkness and the restrictive policies imposed on women to entrench gender inequality and reshape power dynamics, we also honour the resilience of Afghan women and the determination of their allies—who have worked together to pursue justice, using the law as a powerful instrument to confront the gravest injustices of our time. The @ICC arrest warrants demonstrate that the Taliban’s leaders will not escape justice, and these warrants will remain in force for as long as they live.

Hamid Farhadi, a journalist with an independent newspaper operating in exile, was arrested and imprisoned by the Taliban on charges of “spreading propaganda" about the situation of women and girls in Afghanistan.
In reality, Hamid’s only “offense” was speaking truth to power. Women in Afghanistan live under a system of gender apartheid, stripped of their most basic human rights.
Targeting journalists and activists who raise legitimate concerns is a defining feature of authoritarian and dictatorial regimes.
The continued imprisonment of #HamidFarhadi is deeply alarming. Thank you, Amnesty, for advocating for his release—I hope others will join your call.

Any Afghan who does not conform to the Taliban’s ideology or defies their policies faces a serious risk of persecution. Deporting individuals solely on the basis of their Pashtun ethnicity not only violates international law but also reflects clear racial discrimination.

Read our Director @NazifaHaqpal’s article on the ICJ (International Court of Justice) case under CEDAW (Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women) and her analysis of its broader legal and diplomatic implications for Afghanistan.
On the occasion of March 8th, International Women's Day, I published an article with @Diplomat_APAC, arguing that while an ICJ case may not immediately change conditions on the ground in Afghanistan, it carries profound symbolic, political, and legal significance. The case marks a shift in international legal discourse, highlighting gender persecution as a serious human rights violation and reinforcing the principle that impunity for such crimes is unacceptable. I had the honour of participating in two two-day consultations hosted by the Maltese government in collaboration with @OpenSociety and @rawadari_org on 23-24 January 2025.
Participants included lawyers, academics, experts, and Afghan women’s activists who discussed justice and accountability for Afghan women under international law, with a particular focus on a potential case against the Taliban at the ICJ (International Court of Justice) under the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).
While the ICJ’s direct enforcement of rulings is limited, I identified and discussed its implications from political, legal, and diplomatic perspectives here. 👇

Heartbroken by the passing of Raffaella Iodice. Her remarkable dedication to Afghan women's right was truly inspiring. Her relentless efforts in Afghanistan transformed countless lives, amplifying the voices of the unheard. My deepest sympathies to her family and her colleagues @EU_Commission.
