Glad to co-facilitate, with @FAOemergencies , a 3-day capacity-building workshop with @CILSS_Officiel in Abuja 🇳🇬 (11–13 May) on the Resilience Analysis & Measurement (AMR) platform.

GDP is the most widely used metric of economic progress & well-being. But it cannot be the only one.
GDP is indifferent to whether income goes to billionaires or to the poor – or if that income goes to addressing hunger, health or deprivation.
Let’s count what matters: Health. Biodiversity. Job-creation. Human rights. Equality.
Can we do rigorous impact evaluation in emergencies? Yes.

Immediate foreseen consequences:
Fertilizer shortages, higher energy costs > Lower yield and production
raising food prices in low income, import-dependent countries
remittance flows at risk > income decrease
sustained shift toward biofuels > diverting crops from food production.
Disruptions in #StraitOfHormuz are pushing up oil and fertilizer prices, raising farming costs and risks to food security. Diplomacy to reopen the strait is key to stabilizing markets.

The absence of permanent African seats on the Security Council is indefensible.
The Security Council must reflect today’s world. This is 2026 — not 1946.
Whenever decisions about Africa and the world are on the table, Africa must be at the table.

Acute food insecurity has tripled to 300 million people since 2016, yet funding is stuck at 2016 levels.
@FAO’s 1st #GlobalAppeal urges urgent investment in agriculture — scaling with food aid to reach more people, at lower cost. Every dollar must count.

In situations as confused & complex as the one we now face in Venezuela, it's important to stick to principles:
Respect for the @UN Charter.
Respect for the sovereignty, political independence & territorial integrity of states.
The prohibition of the threat or use of force.
The power of the law must prevail.
International law contains tools to address issues such as illicit traffic in narcotics, disputes about resources & human rights concerns.
This is the route we need to take.
