Dreaming of clear skies last night in Southern Ontario. A brief break in the clouds, faint colouring looking SE. Blizzard warnings and aurora warnings are not warnings I like hearing at the same time.
Take thirty seconds and watch Europa and Io serenely sail by, massive Jupiter their background.
Imagine seeing this with your own eyes.
Envy those who, in the future, will.

Im Baaackk.. after about FIVE years of being locked out of my account.. I am finally back.

A Butterfly in the Endless Cosmos.
The Butterfly Nebula (NGC 6302) is one of the most beautiful spectacles in space. It is located about 3,800 light years from Earth in the constellation Scorpius.
This nebula got its name from its shape, reminiscent of the wings of a butterfly, which extend over two light years. These wings are made up of hot gases heated to incredible temperatures by the star at the center of the nebula, which is approaching the end of its life and shedding its outer layers.
The temperature at the center of the nebula reaches 250,000 degrees, making it one of the hottest nebulae known.
“Firefall” at Horsetail Fall in Yosemite National Park, California, looks like a scene from a fantasy movie. But, it is an ordinary waterfall, which is illuminated by the sunset, that gives it a fiery glow.
You ever get the feeling you're the idiot dinosaur sitting outside because there is a low chance of a very cool meteor outburst you want to see, instead of sleeping in a cave with the mammals?

Definitely some nice meteors, but that's it for the predicted timing of the meteor storm. Big ole' bust on that prediction.
Oh well. I find watching meteor radar to be fascinating, though.

We are still awaiting the arrival of the C4.8 coronal mass ejection. Is the CME late or has it missed us entirely? We do not know but the signs are not promising. The solar wind conditions are very quiet and aurora is unlikely to be seen anywhere on the world right now.
Get the coffee ready for early tomorrow morning. Total lunar eclipse (Ireland) begins at 04.41 reaching its maximum at 05.12. The total lunar eclipse ends at 05.43.
Here are a few photos that I took from Inis Oírr of the last lunar eclipse back in September 2015. Clear skies!
