NAVI, at the peak of Cassiopeia's W. It looks like it belongs there, next to the ancient names of Deneb and Alpheratz.

It does not. It is barely 60 years old. 🧵

(3/4) 🔭 All three made it onto @NASA's list of 37 navigation stars.
Back then the star tracker on an Apollo spacecraft was a human eye at a sextant! The crew found one of these stars, centred it, marked it for the computer. They had to recognise the sky themselves.

(4/5) The end 💍 The #RingNebula (M57), ~2,300 light years away in Lyra.
A star much like our Sun reached the end of its life and shed its outer layers. A white dwarf remains at the centre. In ~5 billion years, our own Sun will do the same.
