Over the years, he has managed to build a descent house roofed with iron sheets, bought an oxcart, and is now able to pay school fees for his child. Jere hails from Mathomba Model Village in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Mwambo in Zomba.
Micheal Jere’s life has changed for the better after being exposed to the making and use of manure by extension workers with support from ASWAp – SPII.
Jere is now able to harvest 100 bags of maize weighing 50 kilograms each from his 1 hectare field where he used to harvest less than 20 bags before he started using manure.
Implementation of various ASWAp - SPII interventions in Zomba has assisted to achieve income and food security leading to improved nutrition status of farmers in the district.
Over the years, he has with profits from banana sales managed to buy 0.4 hectares of tea, 15 goats which have multiplied to 32, constructed a house and is able to pay secondary school fees for her two daughters.
The story of Mukhala village, Traditional Authority Mabuka in Mulanje is beyond interesting. This is a village which two years ago was infested with penniless, food shortage and malnutrition problems all emanating from low harvests due to poor farming practices.
Farmers in the village have now hive enough food.
Planting one maize seed per station, double role planting in legumes, correct spacing between planting stations and ridges and planting with early good soaking rains are some of the interventions being implemented in the village
Banana Bunchy Top Virus (BBTV) was responsible for the collapse of banana production in Malawi. BBTV affected livelihood of most farmers in the country mainly the southern region who used to count on bananas for a living. John Bokosi of Namputa village,
with a chamber for banana suckers’ propagation.
Initiatives by government and development partners through projects such as ASWAp-SPII in the improvement and accessibility of clean banana planting materials has seen the fight against BBTV being won gradually.
