Meet H.C. Verma, the man who wrote India's most feared physics textbook because a great American book simply didn't speak to Indian students.

Born in Darbhanga, Bihar in 1952, he studied at Patna Science College, then earned his M. Sc. and Ph. D. at IIT Kanpur. In 1980, he returned to Patna Science College as a lecturer, teaching physics to 11th and 12th standard students using Resnick & Halliday, a textbook he admired deeply.

But he kept watching bright students disengage before they ever reached the beauty of the concept. The book was written for American classrooms, its language and cultural references built around a life these rural Bihar students had never lived. He couldn't find an Indian alternative, so after years of teaching, he built one himself: Concepts of Physics.

He moved to IIT Kanpur in 1994, pursued nuclear physics research, published 139 papers, and kept teaching long after retiring in 2017. He co-founded Shiksha Sopan, which still runs programs for around 250 families near the IIT Kanpur campus, and in 2021 he received the Padma Shri for his contribution to physics education.

He didn't just translate a foreign textbook, he rebuilt it from the ground up for the students it was never written for.

An Indian institute filmed a professor teaching classical physics with no notes, no slides, and a green board. Almost nobody outside India watches it.

This is Classical Physics, lecture 1, taught by V. Balakrishnan at IIT Madras, published free by NPTEL, India's national open courseware programme.

Balakrishnan taught at IIT Madras for decades. Students who sat in that room describe the same thing: the whole subject held in his head, delivered in order, no paper on the podium.

Lecture 1 is the introduction. What classical mechanics claims, where the claims hold, and the exact points where they stop holding and quantum takes over.

Watch how he speaks. Complete sentences, no filler, each idea finished before the next begins. Rare in any lecture hall on any continent.

A physicist I know worked through the whole NPTEL series and rates it above the western courses he paid for.

Free on YouTube, 17 years online, low resolution, no marketing.

The teaching was never concentrated in the famous universities.
