Interesting 🤨 $25 million of general revenue going to a trail system but @lincolnhough and senate appropriations zero out a $2.7 million federal economic development grant (HB 6) specifically for the Rock Island Trail.
Renewable energy infrastructure can bring unintended negative effects for wildlife and their habitats. A local group created guidelines to help local officials and energy companies navigate this problem. Report by @abbyshep13. https://t.co/dCqHdmT6h0

“Our very survival depends on an intact ecosystem,” said Mary Nemecek, head of conservation for the @AudubonKC. Climate change and habitat loss threaten to wipe out local birds, but various groups are helping them fight this threat. https://t.co/U8G3ccknhs
A recent Audubon Society report found two-thirds of North American birds are at increasing risk of extinction because of warming global temperatures. Report by @abbyshep13. https://t.co/7HH3F0Bstw
@KCMO has taken a huge step in the right direction with 3000K lights and Dark Sky certified bulbs in the change to LED lights. Keep birds flying safely over KC. @fox4kc

UPDATE: Parkville has approved a $29,140 donation from contractors to remove plastic netting from its wetlands restoration project. @kcbeacon https://t.co/XZqRqtwrdi
Hooray! It looks like the plastic mat, that can ensnare wildlife & prevent necessary mowing/burning of Platte Landing Park wetlands, is finally being removed. @parkvillemo@KC_USACE will hopefully resolve the other issues with the wetlands & ensure proper long-term maintenance.
@_wolfemily@IndigobuntingKC @kcbeacon @Report4America Important update: Parkville Board of Aldermen meeting Feb. 1 includes plan to remove harmful plastic netting from the wetlands. Thanks to advocates for dogging this:

Burroughs supports KCMO switching to LED lights and the energy savings that it will generate. However, it is important for the city to set a goal of making sure skyglow and light pollution does not increase through proper shielding and the use of dimmers.

INVESTIGATION: Three years after its groundbreaking, Parkville's wetlands project is dead in the water. Contractor missteps and funding debates have derailed a project meant to provide safe habitat for native species @kcbeacon @Report4America : https://t.co/ORHZExHavO
$3.5 Million in taxpayer dollars to build a wetland in Platte Landing Park that can ensnare and endanger Wildlife. It is more dangerous to wildlife now than before @KC_USACE began the project.

Migration floodgates will be wide open the next couple nights. It was catastrophic in downtown KC on the 28th with 26 bird strikes, 9 still alive, in a 30 block area. Yesterday 7 more strikes. Lights out! Blinds and shades closed. @LightsOutHeart@MORiverBirdObs#birdsafeKC
Thanks to our partners @MoRiverBirdObs for all their help with #birdsafekc. Dana Ripper, ED for MRBO, talks about BirdSafeKC along with MDC staff in this great story on the dangers buildings can pose from migrating birds.
The fall migration is amazing for birdwatching, but sadly can be a deadly time for millions of birds who fly into windows. Help ensure a safe journey by preventing window strikes at home or at the office. Learn more at https://t.co/sjmGt0o2N7

September is Lights Out Heartland time! Follow @lightsoutheart for how turning out our lights in September helps birds migrate and decreases light pollution that impacts flora and fauna- including us!
Every year, billions of birds migrate north in the spring and south in the fall. The majority of the birds fly at night, navigating using the Moon, stars and night sky. As they pass over big cities, they can become disoriented by bright artificial lights and sky glow. (1/5)
