I have applied for the Salt Lake City Council District 4 vacancy. The six current Council members will select one of the many applicants at their June 9 (and possibly June 11) meeting.
@BrandeeB450 Thank you for the kind words, Brandee.
That means a lot coming from you because you are so committed to keeping Central City clean and safe.
Agree!👍 He got me involved when I was barely beginning this neighborhood improvement life..we saw problems, brought attention & made improvements to local issues/hotspots.
1) River Rock Apts, 2) 300 E. Low income buildings & crime issues, 3) Taufer & Richmond Park & more. He participates in neighborhood events & activities ALL the time, not just when it’s strategic/politically motivated. I have seen consistency, dedication, determination & follow through during the 4-5 years I have known him…
To those who doubt: Justin and Kenna Valdez moved away from family so they could more easily walk away from their faith. But their eight-year-old son still wanted to be baptized.
Sensing a door opening, a wise stake president scheduled us for a ministering visit to their home. Kenna eventually confided that she still had faith in the Savior, and even a testimony of the Book of Mormon, but faced a few triggering issues that held her back.
We promised them that as they anchored on the things they believed, the Lord would help with the things they didn’t. Overcoming their concerns was not an issue of resolving every faith question but of helping them recognize the Holy Ghost.
As President Dallin H. Oaks recently taught, “You live in a season where the adversary has become so effective at disguising truth that if you don’t have the Holy Ghost, you will be deceived.”
Justin and Kenna began to make the changes necessary to come back to church. Six months after our visit, Kenna texted me: “Hi Elder Gilbert! We are ready to be sealed as a family.”
This is a photo from the day they were sealed at the temple.
Softly and tenderly, Jesus is calling all of us home.

Austin Taylor, a project manager with the city's CRA, just announced that he would run for the open City Council seat representing SLC's Downtown + adjacent.
By far the most qualified candidate to file so far. If he is selected next month, he'd have to quit his job. #utpol
@MikeBarnes75 I've helped the City lend millions of dollars for hundreds of affordable apartments at my day job.
I've invested hundreds of thousands of my own dollars in a project on vacant property in Poplar Grove to build 6 new townhomes for families. That's in my public disclosure doc.
@MikeBarnes75 Two reasons for me:
1. When you care about your city, you want to shape its built environment for the better.
2. When you see a problem (housing affordability), you want to be a part of the solution.
@mattreedah Yes, homelessness is an issue. Criminal behavior in parks is not acceptable. We need a culture of accountability.
I don't pretend to know how to solve it, but we have great people working on it: Tyler Clancy, Chief Redd, etc.
This is a crucial time for the City. We have huge things happening downtown in the next few years: Salt Lake Temple open house, sports and entertainment district planning, major employers like Intermountain Health and Western Governor's University moving in, etc.
