Technical Discussion: The Space Railroad
Beginning sometime around 5000 BC., ancient human civilizations first realized that sending products overseas was cheaper and faster than land-based trade routes, leading to the rapid development of maritime commerce, forever transforming how goods and people were moved about around the ancient world.
Some 6,800 years later in the year 1804, British engineer Richard Trevithick built the first locomotive to successfully pull weight on a track. 21 years later, in 1825, George Stephenson’s Locomotion No. 1 and his famous 1829 Rocket (designed for the Liverpool and Manchester Railway) proved that steam power could reliably transport passengers and cargo at unprecedented speeds. Soon after the railroad would transform the United States, bringing trade, prosperity, and civilization to the frontier and beyond.
The development of the railroad changed the world and human civilization in unimaginable ways. Anything and everything from coal, steel, food, weapons, horses, cattle, and people could be transported quickly and dependably over vast distances on land, connecting towns, villages, and cities in a way never before possible, enabling civilization to grow exponentially faster than at any other time in history.
Over a hundred years later, On June 29, 1956, in the United States, the National Interstate and Defense Highways Act was enacted, when President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the historic bill into law, further connecting cities and towns all over America, providing a means for powerful new trucks with eighteen wheels to become the latest means of transporting vast amounts of goods, foodstuffs, and materials across a vast landmass.
It’s impossible to accurately measure the impact that freighters, the locomotives, and the emergence of tractor trailers has had on the development and advancement of the human species, of human civilizations across the planet. These freight haulers enabled the movement of enormous quantities of materials, goods and resources over vast distances, enabling the erection of cities, skyscrapers, ball parks, stadiums, hydroelectric dams, hotels, nuclear power plants and housing developments all over the world.
Now, as I write this in 2026, a company called SpaceX and in particular the leader of that organization, a man named Elon Musk, has a vision to accomplish for space what was done before for the land and the sea, The people at SpaceX have created platform capable of moving vast amounts of men and material from Earth to orbit, and beyond, eventually transporting goods and services between space stations, mining platforms, and human colonies scattered across planets and earth, and between each other as well. Starship could well become the “locomotive of space” for humanity.
Musk developed Starship, SpaceX’s fully reusable launch vehicle, to dramatically lower the cost of earth to orbit transportation for nearly everyone. Starship, when fully ready, will be able to transport 100-150 tons to low earth orbit. To give you some idea how much 100 tons is, a large bulldozer might way 50 tons, so Starship could carry 3 bulldozers to low earth orbit, perhaps to be used to mine asteroids or to help build a lunar base or a Mars colony. Starship will make travel between the earth, the moon or a Mars colony routine. It will enable humanity to expand throughout our solar system. Something NASA could never achieve on its own, especially with disposable rockets.
A number of cottage industries will develop once Starship is in full production. Several companies have already developed plans for a high-tech rotating space station that creates artificial gravity, and companies are poised to begin mining operations on asteroids, once it is practical and feasible to do so.
It is important to note that before Starship, or more precisely before the Falcon rocket, another reusable spacecraft built by SpaceX, all spacecraft were fully disposable, meaning the entire spaceship was trashed after one launch. Just imagine how that would have impacted air travel if the plane was disposed of after each flight! The cost, if such a flight were ever available, would be astronomical.
Elon Musk may have made a lot of people envious, jealous even, by his incredible success, which has made him the world’s richest man. What impresses me the most about the man, however, has nothing to do with his money. I’m impressed with his vision, his earnest desire to make space travel economically viable, to enable humanity to reach for the stars, and help build a better future for us all.
