#WeAreRainhill #RainhillTogether #7thMay2026
We have been working for 4 years with a group of volunteers, at first, to try and save the library from closure and then to try and take on the former library building. Our aim is to set up a community library that can also act as a community hub to bring Rainhill Together again
There's got to be a documentary on @netflix about this because you just could not make this up....it's an incredulous story but its not a story, its real life.
This needs to serve as one of those planning quotes "has Astley due diligence been adhered to" so any future monumental fuff ups like this cannot be repeated.
Much support and admiration to those impacted and please do not ever go quiet because that's how these things are allowed to just go away and be forgotten about
@astleyaction
And here we are again!!!
While council tax is set to rise by 4.99%, COUNCILLOR'S BASIC RENUMERATION quietly rose by a further 3.22% to ยฃ9,400 for 2025/26
Again, as an Independent, I will not be accepting this and my renuneration will remain at the pre 2024 rate of ยฃ8,236 before that was massively increased by the contraversial 10.58% uplift.
At the time, Council Leader Baines went on the attack at being challenged, saying Rainhill Independents were "stealing a living" and if anybody didn't deserve an increase, it was us, while he encouraged all his Labour Cllrs to take the increase.
Ironically, David Baines is now an MP on an MPs salary plus expenses but he may have also felt a pang of concience at our challenge back because he was the only Labour Cllr (to my knowledge) that followed our lead and did not to take the increase, which you could say smacks of "do as I say, not as I do"
Since April 2024, James and I, as true Rainhill Independents, have not taken the increase, still fulfilled our duties and been visible week in, week out, working hard in not only our ward but our commitments at the town hall on behalf of Rainhill. Therefore, that increase has remained within the council coffers and budget towards essential services across St Helens for the last 2 years.
It may only be around ยฃ1700 each but between us, that's ยฃ3400 that we have refused to take.
There were another 45 Cllrs in St Helens in the same position who all had the same decision to make, take it or leave it in the budget.
While the majority took it, some of our other Independents in St Helens (Terry and Karl in NLW), took it on the proviso to specifically use within their ward on their own projects
AS Rainhill Independents THAT IS SOMETHING WE COULD ALSO CONSIDER NOW AS IT ONCE AGAIN RISES BY A FURTHER 3.22%.
So it's over to YOU Rainhill, what would you like us to do as your elected members? *Discussion now open.....
