It was an honor to meet His Excellency Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro, President of Somaliland.
He is a leader driving a vision of development, stability, and institution building. What I witnessed on the ground reflects a leadership that believes progress is achieved through action, not slogans.
Washington knows the governance challenges facing Mogadishu. Thatโs why it appears to be pursuing a dual-track approach in the Horn: engaging Somalia while steadily deepening ties with Somaliland to protect its strategic interests. In geopolitics, keeping options open.
๐จ HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT.
U.S. REJECTS SOMALILAND SOVEREIGNTY AFTER ISRAEL RECOGNITION
The U.S. State Department has formally reaffirmed Somaliaโs โsovereignty and territorial integrity,โ dealing a blow to Somalilandโs push for international recognition.
This comes after Israel reportedly became the first country to recognize Somaliland, with growing Israeli interest in its strategic position near the Red Sea, Yemen, and the Bab al-Mandab Strait.

For more than thirty-five years, the Republic of Somaliland has demonstrated to the world that peace, stability, democratic governance, and functioning state institutions can be built and sustained through the will and determination of its people.
In stark contrast, Somalia to date continues to grapple with insecurity, terrorism, political instability, displacement, and recurring conflict.
This raises a profound and unavoidable moral question:
What truly defines a state in the eyes of the international community? Is it a society that has successfully established peace, conducted democratic elections, maintained security, and built accountable institutions? Or is it one that remains trapped in cycles of violence, instability, and humanitarian crises?
The answer to this question remains one of the great contradictions of contemporary international politics.
It is worth reflecting on the fact that the U.S. Deputy Ambassador H.E. Justin Davis visited yesterday morning to a country that enjoys peace, stability, and order: The Republic of Somaliland.
He then returned yesterday afternoon to a country plagued by conflict, bloodshed, and widespread displacement (Somalia), where even diplomatic movement remains heavily restricted beyond the secure perimeter of the Halane compound.

The U.S. Chargรฉ d'Affaires a.i. at the American Embassy in Somalia, Justin Davis, visited Somaliland today and met with President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi at the Presidential Palace in Hargeisa.
Mogadishu will not be happy with this visit.
Somaliland just got its first lesson in American โsupport"
The US wants the ports
The US wants the bases
The US wants the minerals
But when Somaliland asked for sovereignty ?
Washington sided with Somalia
Israel knows this pattern very well

The latest (06/2026) US position on Somalia: "The United States recognizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia, which includes the region of Somaliland." This report also highlights the difficulty of investing in Somaliland because of its disputed status and its refusal to cooperate with the national authorities in Mogadishu.

Opinion: Recognizing Somaliland is not enough. Israel can't stop with the opening of embassies and exchange of ambassadors; it has to turn a symbolic breakthrough into diplomatic momentum.

Senate Ted cruz Intensifies push for US to recognise Somaliland.
A strategic partner for stability, security, and freedom of navigation in the Horn of Africa. Countering China. Countering the Houthis. #Washington#Somaliland#USA#Security#HornOfAfrica
Sen. Ted Cruz: "Somaliland promises to be a critical counterterrorism ally for the United States, both because of its strong willingness to partner with us and because of its unique location. We should recognize the Republic of Somaliland as an independent state and, in the meantime, significantly boost our counterterrorism cooperation."
Iran expert Lisa Daftari on why Tehran fears the small African state:
"Somaliland is offering the United States what the mullahs fear most in this theater โ an alternative, resilient platform on the African shore that includes an airfield, port, and over-the-horizon access that would dilute Houthi leverage and give Washington options that don't depend on Djibouti or Persian Gulf partners alone."
Somaliland overlooks the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, where Houthis have choked global shipping.

Within this worldview, Somalilandโs push for independence is not treated as an isolated constitutional or legal question, but as part of a broader regional struggle over sovereignty, influence and control of maritime corridors.
