Let me drop a quick story on how I literally dodged a bullet as a Nigerian vendor.
Experience is great, but in this line of work, one rule will save your life every time:
Keep your cool. Don’t be desperate. TRUST nobody, VERIFY everything.
I’ve been in the gadget business for almost two decades, and even with all that experience, this one nearly got me.
So a “client” hit me up early yesterday morning, interested in the iPhone 16 Pro I posted (along with a few other gadgets).
We negotiated, agreed on a price, and he said I should meet him at Alausa Secretariat, Deputy Governor’s Office.
Cool. I booked an Uber and moved.
Midway into the ride, he texts me again, says he just left the office and urgently needs to go to the bank.
I told him no wahala, he should be done before I arrive. He agreed.
I get to Alausa… he’s “still at the bank.”
Then he tells me to meet him at Globus Bank, Allen Junction.
He even asked me to order a ride and promised to refund the fare.
Ah ah no need. Allen is not far. I took public transport.
I reached Globus and saw him step out of a 2018 Highlander. Guy was giving that “young, connected politician” vibe. Clean. Confident. Polished.
But in business? All that means nothing.
We went inside the bank, he checked the phone, nodded, and pulled out his device to “make the payment.”
He showed me a successful receipt…
But nothing landed.
Calls were coming in nonstop. He said he needed to rush back because “his boss is calling him.”
Then he tried leaving the banking hall with my phone in his hand, insisting the money would drop soon.
That was the moment the old rule rang loud in my head:
Don’t TRUST, VERIFY.
We stepped outside near the Highlander, he told the driver to put on the AC, but while he stepped away, I quickly used my Opay App to transfer money to the GTB account I gave him initially, my transfer went through instantly.
He came back, I told him what happened.
He suddenly became helpful, suggesting I call my bank to “verify.”
My bank asked for his SessionID, he provided one, and they said there was no pending transaction. Nothing. Zero.
He then called his “Account Officer.”
The officer confidently read out my details and claimed the transfer was successful, telling me to “relax.”
At that point, everything was clear:
The man, the Jeep, the calls, the urgency…
All part of a coordinated trick.
He tried to walk away calmly with the phone again.
I held my ground, he finally gave it back.
He asked, “So what do we do?”
I told him to suggest.
He fumbled, then claimed he’d email his bank for reversal.
I checked the phone, no iCloud was signed in, then walked away from the whole scene.
Real talk? I almost fell for it.
But staying calm saved me.
Desperation kills. Experience helps. Verification saves.
I shared this with a vendor friend, he said he might have fallen for it, especially with the whole politician + bank environment setup.
So I’m sharing this for every vendor in Computer Village, Olugbede Model Market Alimosho Area, and every gadget seller out there:
Stay sharp. No matter the ambiance, packaging, or “status”… verify everything.
As for my Web3 mates, there's a lesson here as well and my LEGIT client might just be on your TL.
Meanwhile, the iPhone 16 Pro 512GB eSim enabled is still very much available for sale. Mint Condition. Sharp OpenBox. Warranty on Purchase. ₦1,450,000 only
PS: You can come with your reasonable negotiations, thank you.
Day 7.
