4 July marks Rwanda’s Liberation Day, commemorating the decisive role of the Rwanda Patriotic Army (RPA) in stopping the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and liberating the country. As the international community failed to intervene meaningfully while the massacres unfolded, the RPA advanced to end the genocide, rescue countless lives, and lay the foundation for a united, secure, and prosperous Rwanda.
During the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi, over one million Tutsis were systematically murdered in just 100 days by Hutu extremists, the interim government, the FAR army, and Interahamwe militias. In response, the Rwandan Patriotic Army (RPA), the military wing of the Rwandan Patriotic Front, under the command of Major General Paul Kagame, launched a decisive offensive on 8 April 1994. Its mission was clear: stop the genocide and rescue trapped civilians and RPA forces in Kigali. Through disciplined, multi-front operations, the RPA rapidly liberated northern and eastern regions, severed supply lines to the genocidal regime, captured Gitarama on 13 June, and liberated the capital Kigali on 4 July 1994.
The RPA’s victory dismantled the machinery of extermination, halted the organized mass killings, and liberated Rwanda from a regime intent on the total destruction of the Tutsi people. A new Government of National Unity was formed, marking the beginning of Rwanda’s reconstruction under RPF leadership. #InkotanyiNiUbuzima

11 April 1994, When protection was withdrawn, and lives were left behind.
At the height of the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi, thousands of Tutsi sought refuge at ETO Kicukiro, trusting the presence of United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda.
But on this day, Belgian UN peacekeepers, under Lt. Luc Lemaire, withdrew, abandoning those they were meant to protect.
Within hours, over 2,000 people were killed.
This was not just a tragic moment—it was a failure of international responsibility.
Peacekeeping is not only about presence. It is about protection, courage, and commitment when it matters most.
When that duty is abandoned, neutrality becomes complicity.
As we remember during #Kwibuka32, we must ask:
👉 What is the value of peacekeepers if they cannot protect the vulnerable?
👉 What lessons has the world truly learned?
#NeverAgain must mean never abandoning those at risk.
