On November 12, 1966, during the , astronaut captured this iconic image of the Gemini spacecraft while performing a standup EVA from the open hatch. The photograph revealed the forward section of the spacecraft and its adapter module as Aldrin conducted important tests in microgravity. Gemini 12 became one of NASA’s most significant preparation missions for Apollo, proving that astronauts could safely and effectively work outside a spacecraft for extended periods.

Earlier Gemini missions had shown how exhausting spacewalks could be, but Aldrin applied carefully planned techniques based on underwater training and body stabilization methods. Using handholds, tethers, and improved procedures, he successfully completed multiple EVAs totaling more than five hours. These lessons directly influenced the design of later Apollo moonwalks, helping astronauts move and work more efficiently on the lunar surface during humanity’s first landings on the Moon.
