Yes - 95+ Exit Velo off the bat is great to see and coaches love that. But if the hitter each year is always hitting around 200 or less does the 95 exit Velo really matter? I know I rather have a .300+ hitter with a Lower exit Velo to help us win baseball games. Sometimes their are players who are just cage hitters.

Hey kids, the Yankees season is over because they dropped an F8, had poor footwork on a 6-5 FC causing an E6 and a P didn’t cover 1st on a routine 3-1. So when your coaches are covering the details “you already know how to do” just keep your mouths shut and execute the drills.

If a coach tells you to get into your legs.
This is what it looks like.
Notice-piping on back thigh angles back.
Chest behind waist.
Hitting against firm (inverted front knee).
Put on pants with piping and get into this position in front of a mirror.
Feel it.

It seems like everywhere you look now, random travel teams are just adding the word NATIONAL to the end of their team name. Is that supposed to mean something?

You are who you hang with.

And science proves this.

Dr. David M. Cullen’s 25 year Harvard study reveals a profound truth.

The people you spend the most time with greatly impact your future.

He found that up to 99% of your success comes from your friend group.

That’s a big deal.

Surround yourself with positive, driven, successful, go-getters and you will become the same.

Conversely, if you hang with negative, underachievers, you will become that too.

Think about your friend group.

It MATTERS a lot!

The amount of HS baseball players who think they are D1 recruits yet lack the basic fundamental knowledge of how to play a 7 inning baseball game is comical. It’s borderline an epidemic!!

Free Bases

During my years coaching in the Angels organization (2012-2014 minor league pitching coach) we would keep track of these every game. FREE BASES. Our goal was to have 5 or less per game. Our analytics department told us if we did this we had a 72% chance of winning that game.

FREE BASES are…

Walks
Balks
Wild Pitches
Passed Balls
Errors
Stolen Bases
HBP (Hit By Pitch)

The best way to accomplish this goal game after game was through discussion, taking it one pitch at a time, being intentional in our preparation and to slow the game down mentally. “You control the game, don’t let it control you”.

Walks: Whether there is no runners on or the bases are loaded, slow it down, analyze the situation you are in and execute a quality pitch. Make them earn their way on base, give them something to hit and don’t GIVE them that FREE BASE!
**Sure there may be times late in a game when we pitch around a guy or intentionally walk a batter to put ourselves in a better situation.

Balks: Again, slow the game down. Balks usually happen when we let things speed up on us. Make sure you are ready before you put your foot on that rubber. Develop a relaxed intensity that allows for you to be locked in and focused but also prepared for chaos. Don’t panic when your opponent tries to get in your head.

Wild Pitches: To prevent these, it takes two players. As pitchers, first we need a controlled consistent delivery that allows for a consistent release point. As a catcher, we need to be confident in our ability to block the baseball. Work hard and become one of the best at it. It does a lot mentally for a pitcher knowing that they can throw an 0-2 breaking ball in the dirt and their backstop has their back and will do their part.

Passed Balls: Catchers, this is on you. Focus on every pitch. Watch the ball all the way to your glove. Give hard focus when catching bullpens. Focus on receiving. Develop your fast twitch.

Errors: The more we limit these as a team, we will always have a better chance at getting that W. Work your butt off to be a fundamentally sound player! Coaches, never ignore the importance of your team being able to take care of the baseball. Defensive fundamentals must be a weekly focus.

Stolen Bases: This is on the pitchers. We NEED to be experts at controlling the running game. Learn what counts they like to run in. Vary your hold times. Don’t fall into patterns (don’t hold for the same count every pitch). Develop quality pick-off moves. Have a good inside move to second. These all take practice. This is a must if you want to be the best at this game!!

HBP: For me, this one could go both ways. Yes it is counted as a FREE BASE but this FREE BASE can work for us as pitchers too. If we are good at pitching inside, this WILL happen. When this does happen, not only will that hitter remember that the next time they come up but when we pitch in (and happen to hit a couple batters), every guy in the other dugout will start to notice. They all might start backing off the plate opening up the outer half for us. Pitchers, develop confidence on pitching inside. That is YOUR plate!!

Limit the FREE BASES we allow as a team and our odds of winning that game go way up!!

What is the difference between Coachable and Uncoachable players?

Coachable Players:
- Seek feedback
- Accept coaching
- Ask questions

Uncoachable Players
- Know it all already
- Always have an excuse
- Get defensive

Be Coachable.

Early work with the @vandyboys

Notice the exaggerated posture working from the ground up to warm it up for the day

Love the flat pad to focus on catching it in the kill spot each time. Many throwing errors are a result of catching errors

TOPIC OF THE DAY: The Special Teams of High School Baseball: Base Running.

The talk of a football game is that if you can win 2 out of 3 main categories between offense, defense, and special teams, you have a good chance to win the game. We like to spin that into a baseball version with the special teams portion being base running.

The base running version of our game is broken up into two phases: everyday base running and stealing bases.

Our everyday base running is backed by the principle that there is NO SUCH THING AS: 1.) a sure out (running down the line through 1B at 100% intent regardless of the assumed level of difficulty of the defensive play puts pressure on the defense; it will make them react in a way that can force mistakes), 2.) a sure single (thinking two out of the box, pushing the envelope for that extra 90 starts by your intent off the bat), 3.) a sure double (when a sure double is a given, we are thinking an additional 90 to third base; again, intent dictates this result when opportunity presents itself), 4.) a sure triple (when a sure triple is a given, we are thinking an additional 90 to home plate; we have had our fair share of inside-the-park home runs, and this again starts with intent out of the box and the understanding of our philosophy that this isn’t a shock when we are continuing to advance).

The second part is stealing bases. This comes with a mindset of looking to take advantage of an under-taught part of the game: holding runners on. We have had great success with stealing, averaging 4.7 stolen bases a game at an 86% success rate over 7 seasons. Our base-stealing system is a product of our #CalculatedChaos offense, which is a unique system of old-school traditional philosophies combined with new-school philosophies that are highly effective at the high school level regardless of having traditional “base stealers” who are labeled that due to their obvious natural foot speed.
